What Do You Mean Its Not Political / Watch Dogs: Legion

  • Since the game is set in a post-Brexit setting, many fans have accused Ubisoft of trying to weigh in on the real life Brexit debate, but as is usual for Ubisoft they're claiming that the game will be strictly apolitical and that the game was in pre-production prior to Brexit.
  • The perennial political discussions over Scotland's independence seem to have gone all the way through in this game, as Scotland is fully independent, with its flag's saltire on the Union Jack replaced with the yellow cross from Wales's Flag of Saint David.
  • All across London there are "We are not illegal!" messages that are spread throughout London, decrying treating immigrants as less than born citizens. Considering the timing of the game's development and release, which roughly coincided with increasing anti-migration sentiment across the entirety of Europe, it's a surprisingly apropos element, intentional or otherwise.
  • Refugees are all locked away in a single sports stadium shantytown with no option to deport them because the rest of Europe won't take them either. They are vulnerable to crime and unable to escape the horrible living conditions they are in.
  • Crypto-currency is discussed at length with the benefits and its counter-culture origins weighed against the fact corporations have since gotten involved, using it as a way to devalue traditional institutions while benefiting themselves.
  • The homelessness problem in the UK has exploded with 14,000 citizens said to be living on the streets despite massive amounts of buildings being empty and kept for rich renters.
  • A message will pop up for gamers recruiting too many members of either gender into their DedSec in an attempt to shame them into gender balancing their group.
  • The media telling flat out lies to cover for Albion's violence towards protest, unlawful crackdowns, and claiming any claims that DedSec was framed as fake news and any suggestion was only from outside actors to cause division. Doesn't that sound familiar?
  • One of Hamish's side missions involves dealing with the English Patriotic Action Front, a group with more than a passing resemblance to certain real-life far-right and anti-immigrant political organisations in the UK such as the British National Party (BNP) and English Defence League (EDL). To really drive it home, the achievement for completing the mission is called "England for Everyone".
  • During the boss fight against Nigel Cass, said boss explicitly blurts out "I will make London great again!"
  • After the SIRS video leaks about torturing an American to death, they claim it is a fabrication by Russian Trolls.
  • In the DedSec Base, there is AAAB graffiti. It is clearly an acronym based on ACAB (All Cops Are Bastards — Presumably the C has been replaced with an A for Albion), a popular anti-authoritarian slogan.
  • The National Health Service of Britain is gutted in the setting and privatized medical service is being offered instead, which the game portrays as extremely inferior. Though this seems to be being held off in real life, the privatisation of the NHS and acquisition by any of several large foreign investors is a significant concern among the British public.
  • One of Nowt's missions deals with the fact foreign investors are buying up large amounts of houses they use as tax shelters as well as to keep real estate prices high. This makes the homelessness problem even more pronounced.
  • During the finale of the SIRS quest line Richard Malik uses the phrase "Strong and Stable", a phrase often used by former Prime Minsiter Theresa May during her campaigning.
