The VHS Cover

Daisy Head Mayzie is a 1995 animated adaption from Hanna-Barbera and Collingwood & Co. based on the book of the same name.

Tropes present include:

  • A Dog Named "Dog": The Mayor is refereed to as such.
  • Animation Bump: The animation is rather good considering that Hanna-Barbera is known for their cheap animation.
  • Adults Are Useless: The teacher, and the principal don't do anything to help Mayzie and her condition.
  • All for Nothing: Quite literally. There was no reason for anything Mayzie went through. It's never even stated why the Daisy even grew out of her head in the first place either.
  • Bee Afraid: The bees chase after Mayzie for her daisy and she has to escape from them.
  • Character Narrator: The Cat In the Hat narrates the story, and also helps to get Mayzie home. Averted in the reprinted version, in which the narrator appears in the beginning as a generic human, but otherwise has no real role in the story.
  • Can't Live Without You: Mayzie’s daisy is tied to her health, and when it started to wilt, Mayzie started to loose consciousness in the process.
  • Circle of Shame: All of the kids sing an extremely cringe-worthy and simple chant song about Mayzie and her Daisy.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The Principal does nothing to help her, and Dr. Eisenbart hearing the Daisy's heart is more concerned about having a research grant instead of helping the poor girl.
  • Corner of Woe: Mayzie runs away and cries on a curvy cliff towards the end.
  • Covers Always Lie: Subverted, it mostly spoils. The cover shows the part where The Cat in the Hat is shown bringing Mayzie home with her friends welcoming her when she comes at the very end.
  • Faint in Shock: Downplayed. In the book, Mrs. McGrew says, "I'm going to faint" when she sees that her daughter has a daisy growing from her head, and she's illustrated looking woozy, but she remains conscious. In the Animated Adaptation, however, she does pass out.
  • Famous for Being Famous: The only reason Mayzie gets famous is because of something that was out of her control.
  • Grand Staircase Entrance: When the Mayor's royal assistant makes way for him using the Principal's books.
  • Good-Times Montage: Mayzie getting famous and being seen everywhere.
  • "I Am Great!" Song: The Mayor sings about how great he is about his desire to either kill Mayzie's daisy or throw her out of town.
  • Jerkass: The Mayor announces he will ban Mayzie from town and to cut off her Daisy (which would probably kill her hypothetically), the children made fun of her and had no help, and even Finagle the Agent as he does not allow her to see her old friends and family.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end where Mayzie's Daisy appears on her head again.
  • Interactive Narrator: The Cat in the Hat is seen everywhere in the subject matter when he is shown.
  • Kids Are Cruel: All the kids literally do nothing but make fun of her and her Daisy.
  • Magic Hair: Finagle the Agent's hair is made of black ink that the Daisy uses to sign it's signature on the contract he presents to her.
  • My Nayme Is: Mayzie’s name.
  • No OSHA Compliance: The school entirely, from all of the book towers at the principal's office, the room that Mayzie is temporarily locked in in easily can climb out and has a window, and also Mayzie's mansion that she lived on on the top floor being completely unsafe.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Mayzie is completely ordinary with no backstory or personality traits shown at all.
  • Parasol Parachute: The Cat in the Hat uses one to float down to the school while narrating, and in order to set the mood for what is about to come.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Mayzie's school uniform/attire.
  • Running Away to Cry: Towards the end, at after having had enough of all of the fame thrown in front of her, she runs away from all of it to cry on a cliff.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: It was very easy for Mayzie to climb out the window using a pillow even though she was locked in there.
  • Synchronization: The daisy on Mayzie’s head is tied to her health, and if it does, so does she.
  • Ultimate Authority Mayor: Everyone appears to respect him, and he has the ultimate decision on what happens to Mayzie and her daisy as it appears.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: There is virtually nothing special about Mayzie at all. In fact, she doesn't even speak much throughout the film nor does she have any qualities about her that make her iconic.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The agent Finagle is never seen again after he holds a freak show featuring her on a stage, also the Mayor completely disappears when Finagle is introduced.
