AKA Cult Toons was an experimental comedy show that aired on Cartoon Network UK between 1999 to 2000. The show used episodes of old Hanna-Barbera cartoons and interspersed them with random clips ranging from blaxplotation films, kung fu movies and other cartoons in a style commonly likened to YouTube Poop, years before it hit the Internet. The show was hosted by Jackie Potato, a blaxplotation Expy of Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory. It also had guest host appearances including the likes of professional wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage and the London Towers basketball team.
Cult Toons provides examples of:
- Blaxploitation: Many clips the show uses derive from the genre.
- Censored for Comedy: Sometimes, certain portions of dialogue are bleeped in the clips to make it diriter than they originally were (which was done more frequently in Funky Phantom Menace).
- Expy: Jackie Potato is Dexter given a Blaxploitation style with the stereotypes turned up to eleven.
- Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Usually in the form of combining a Hanna-Barbera character with an outside reference. e.g. Captain Majors Lonely Hearts Club Band.
- Running Gag: One of the chief sources of humour from the show.
- Certain uses of Stock Footage (see below) count.
- The intro sequence or a brief clip from The Gary Coleman Show playing briefly, only for Andy Lebeau to invariably get blown to smithereens. Sometimes followed by a test pattern accompanied by the words:
- Stock Footage: Many clips are reused in different episodes – some more often than others.
- From Birdman (1967):
- "No!"
- "In the Andes, directly over a tall mountain…"
- "Direct hit!"
- From The Godzilla Power Hour:
- <After a clip is repeated a few times> "They've put him in a trance!"
- "That's about 200 miles southeast of here."
- "Captain Majors!"
- From various blaxploitation movies:
- "This is HONKY FOOD!"
- "FIFTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!"
- "DUMBASS!"
- "Shut up! You want to complain, go put your head in the toilet!"
- "Huh, cheeky baby?"
- "…I think you might be right."
- "Ah, yes!"
- <someone speaks incoherently/mumbles/babbles> "He's speaking in an alien language!"
- "Don't touch that!" <thing gets touched> "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"
- Ew, Scooby! You've got something on you!"
- A number clips involving Winslow Wong.
- From Birdman (1967):
- Parody Product Placement: Each episode is sponsored by a fictional company from Hanna-Barbera/MGM shows (such as Stoner, Stoner and Pyrite Agency, Coo Coo Cola).
- Take That!: As mentioned under Running Gag, the creators really have it out for The Gary Coleman Show.
- We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Or rather, We Are Experiencing Gary Coleman Difficulties, as mentioned under Running Gag and Take That!.
