Space Pawdyssey
, set in a universe populated by anthropomorphic animals, is the story of a band of misfits who unintentionally find themselves saving the Alliance.
These misfits include:
- Felix: A fox engineer with dreams of adventure in space and little social tact.
- Rowan: A border collie security officer haunted by her father's crimes.
- Captain Connor: A wolf, former member of the Galaxy Rangers and poster child of the Alliance, now an alcoholic with PTSD.
- Etzel: German shepherd, the ship's cook, of questionable ability, used to be in command.
- Lex: Raccoon, a mercenary who distrusts the Alliance but will do anything for Toby.
- Toby: Cougar, another mercenary who was nobility on his destroyed homeworld but has left it behind.
Tropes:
- The Alliance: By name even. It includes several species, and the first arc involves the potential admission of the Avians, though some Canines believe it should be choosier about membership.
- Archnemesis Dad: Rowan's father, the disgraced admiral Grant, seems to be shaping up to be the Big Bad after his escape from prison.
- Bounty Hunter: Lex and Toby's typical jobs.
- Broken Pedestal: Felix is quite disappointed to find that his hero Connor is now a fat alcoholic, though he manages to build some of his faith in him back up over the course of the first arc.
- Brutal Honesty: Felix, as part of his tendency to babble when nervous. He tells a celebrity engineer that one of his papers was fatally flawed to his face and doesn't realize he said anything wrong.
- Captain Crash: Before Etzel became a cook he was captain of two different starships and a space station, all of which crashed.
- Earpiece Conversation: Lex tries to use an earpiece to coach Felix through an apology to another engineer but it gets spotted a few lines in and he comes clean.
- The Engineer: Felix is a brilliant starship mechanic, and has a tendency to take things apart to fix them when he's feeling anxious.
- Fantastic Racism: The few remaining Felines are not well-liked by many inhabitants of the Alliance, who refer to them as "strays."
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: Lex and Toby have been practically joined at the hip since their childhood in refugee camps.
- Homeworld Evacuation: The Galaxy Rangers managed to save 40,000 Felines from the destruction of their homeworld, out of 16 billion.
- Lethal Chef: Downplayed, Etzel is actually a decent cook, it's just that his ingredients are a bit limited on board starships. Toby on the other hand managed to send his cooking instructor to the ER by mixing up the sugar and salt.
- Living Lie Detector: Felix, he claims he learned how to read the body language of his four siblings'. He's also really good at poker.
- My Greatest Failure: The evacuation of the Feline homeworld for captain Connor, it's implied to be the biggest reason he drinks.
- Nondescript, Nasty, Nutritious: Alliance shipboard rations take the form of hypoallergenic nutrient powders that are intended to be safe for a variety of species to eat. They're usually mixed with water to form a pudding-like blob or shake, though Lex manages to make something resembling ravioli when Etzel challenges him.
- Retired Badass: Captain Connor has been relegated to desk duty and PR stunts for a while now, but after the incident with the ambassador he attempts to rebuild the Galaxy Rangers.
- Species Surname: Most characters only go by their first names but on the rare occasion a second name is used it's usually their species.
- World of Funny Animals: It appears each family of species comes from a different planet. The Feline species had the same homeworld, and there's references to a Canine homeworld.
