The Barrytes Present

Follow June Crocker in her adventures among the living and the dead. Are we sort of burying the lead on things? Like the fact that June's parents were crushed by a satellite and she was subsequently raised by ghosts until her freshmen year of high school? Oh, uh, yeah, we guess we are! June was raised by ghosts and with her ghoulish surrogate family, she is doing her best to navigate the oddity that is high school. It's not like there's a swirl of mystery around her or anything...

Obituary is a webcomic written by the siblings Michael and Zara Barryte. It is the Sequel in Another Medium to the 2016 animated pilot Obituary: A Grave Beginning. The series can be found here on Webtoon.

Additionally, the series also has shorter comics in the form of O-bits, and a Fourth-Wall Mail Slot in the form of Mortuary Mail.

The webcomic provides examples of:

  • Art Shift: Happens every time characters planewalk, with each plane being represented by a different art style.
  • Character Development: In "Forest in Peace", Daisy realizes with the help of June that she doesn't always have to parrot what Lisa Rose says and can have her own opinions, briefly taking the lead in trying to get out of the forest.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In "Spectre Elector", the moment June says she's going to run against Lisa Rose in the school election, the latter has Daisy put up a poster telling people not to vote for June, much to her, Blatsy's, and Sandy's surprise. Lisa Rose follows it up by telling June not to feel special, and that she made one for everyone (even her "friend" Violet).
  • Demonic Possession: Ghosts have an ability called mindscaping, allowing them to take over a person's body.
    • "Revamplin' Gramplin" and "Forest in Peace" respectively reveal that mindscaping also works on corpses and animals.
    • Edmund explains the ability further in "Mindscaping", saying that while ghosts can possess anyone, they prefer to use corpses, and that mindscaping a person without consent is "a grave ghostly offense".
  • Hypocritical Humor: In "Forest in Peace", Vince objects to June's plan to navigate using the stars, saying you shouldn't put your faith in them.
Daisy: You only say that because you're a Gemini.
    Vince: Well, yeah. Duh.
  • The Gambling Addict: The Faceless Abomination is one, with it even saying that it clinically can't resist a wager.
  • Running Gag: Any time the school paper is mentioned, Blatsy will say that with admiration that it's read by tens of people.
  • Supreme Chef: Sandy is an expert baker, with her pies having won many state fairs back when she was alive.
  • Take That!: "Crypto" is one towards cryptocurrency:
Mr. Catfield: So people are making up stuff and calling it money and other people are forking over their real money for it with no guarantee it will actually hold the value of their tangible goods?
    June: Essentially, yeah.
Mr. Catfield: Wowie. And here I was thinking nobody could top the quiz show scandals for easy cash!
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While Vince is still a delinquent, he doesn't bully Blatsy like he did in the pilot. This is explained in "Food Chain", in which June asked him to stop and he agreed, admitting that he's been "working through some complex emotions".
