The Epic of Vergilius the Red Gaze

Leviathan is a Webcomic/Webnovel series released by Project Moon.Taking place sometime between the events of Library of Ruina's True Ending and the events of Limbus Company, the series centers around the Fixer known as Vergilius (aka The Red Gaze).

The webcomic was illustrated by the artist Monggeu/koug99 (몽그) and serialized from December 24 2021 to June 17 2022. During that time, the comic suffered frequent delays due to a number of complications surrounding the artist's health and the pressures of working on a comic for the first time, which would eventually lead to the contract being terminated and the series being reworked into a webnovel on June 17 2022, featuring illustrations from Project Moon's art team. The series was concluded on October 28th, 2022, but the English translations have been put on hiatus as the translation team works on Limbus Company. However, an unofficial fan translation of the final 5 chapters has been since released by Snakeskin on July 13th, 2023. They can be found here.

A Character page is currently in-progress.

Tropes concerning Leviathan

  • Alternate Self: Garnet is refracted to the power of infinity and is thrown into the viewpoint of multiple alternate lives, some of which include putting him in the position of certain guests from Library of Ruina, a Ring Maestro, the Black Silence, and what appears to be a normal man in a completely different city.
  • The Commies Made Me Do It: Played with. When Vergilius asks Nanseul why he betrayed the rest of the Office, he states that unlike The Ring, Vergilius won't harm Nanseul's family over his betrayal.
  • Call-Back: Several are made to the events of Library of Ruina.
    • In the first chapter, the aftermath of Angela's decision to release her guests is shown, with Tomerry destroying Vergilius' orphanage and Iori preventing Vergilius from killing them while hinting at her own plans.
    • In Chapter 14, two of the alternate versions of Garnet are Lulu from Streetlight Office and the Black Silence.
    • In the final chapter, Vergilius reminisces about his relationship with Roland before and after his wife's death. Roland was even willing to kill Vergilius if he found out he and the Pianist were connected.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: It's implied the Carnelian from an alternate timeline was killed by being crushed under so much pressure that they hardened and became an actual carnelian gemstone.
  • Downer Beginning: It's Christmas Eve, and Vergilius' office has given him a bunch of gifts to give to the children at his orphanage. He starts his walk home with the toys and a Santa hat... Only to hear screaming, and when he runs to the source of it, he discovers Tomerry free from their book, having destroyed the orphanage and killed dozens of the children there. Iori stops him from completely stopping them, the two fighting to a standstill until Vergilius passes out. Chapter 2 shows that Vergilius is still shaken by the event to the point he refuses Garnet's offer to go see Lapis, thinking he doesn't deserve to talk with any of them anymore.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Regardless of the threats posed, Vergilius will survive them, as he has to be alive for Limbus Company.
  • Happy Ending Override: To the Golden Ending of Library of Ruina. It transpires that Angela freeing her guests from her books was done indiscriminately, randomly shunting murderous lunatics to places where they could do a lot of harm
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Whatever happened to Lapis, Garnet blames himself for being unable to save her. This carries over to his alternate selves when refracting, with different Garnets mourning over Lapis in multiple different lifetimes.
  • Interquel: Takes place after the True Ending of Library of Ruina, but before the events of Limbus Company.
  • Mad Artist: The members of the Ring are shown to be this.
