Tropes

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The Stardust Crusaders videos often utilize 3D models, usually when Stands are involved.
  • Accidental Pervert: In MHA S2, Snipe accidentally touches an invisible Hagakure's boob. The scene then cuts to a news headline of him being investigated for misconduct.
    Snipe: What was that?
Hagakure: Did you just touch my boob!?
    Snipe: No, wait! No!-
    (Cut)
Newspaper: UA Teacher and local hero under investigation for misconduct.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Many characters are given this treatment for humorous effect.
    • Minoru Mineta is flanderized into a annoying far-right note  troll that everyone hates.
"Superheroes as social commentary?! I have OPINIONS ON THAT!!!!
    • Old Joseph Joestar is much more openly sleazy in regards to his affair with Tomoko (Josuke's Mom), rushing the Crusaders out of Japan as fast as possible when she spots him.
Kakyoin: Your dedication to your daughter is admirable, [Mr. Joestar].
Joseph: Yeah, well, I also really don't want to be noticed here-
Tomoko: (Spotting Joseph from behind) Joseph? Joseph, is that you?-
      Joseph: MOVE MOVE MOVE!!
  • Anachronism Stew: When Joseph reveals Jotaro has a 6-year-old uncle, Jotaro extorts a PS5 out of him despite it being 1989, when the PlayStation hadn't even existed yet.
  • Analogy Backfire: After the brief Homage Derailment, Dio asks how much bread Jonathan eat in response to being asked how many souls has he consumed, Jonathan responds that he doesn't eat bread, which contributes to his muscular Heroic Build since he was 12-years-old.
  • Arc Fatigue: invokedDIO believes that Stardust Crusaders having nine more Stand Users with an Egyptian God theme after already doing the Tarot Card theme is a bit much.
DIO: It seems like we should have done one or the other, now it just feels like we're dragging it out.
  • Art Evolution: The first few episodes are flash-styled animations using character cutouts like puppets. Starting with the Demon Slayer episode, they move to using more of the source footage like they would a classic abridged series.
  • Ass Pull: In-Universe; DIO seems to think Star Platinum also being able to stop time is this, this ability having come up without any foreshadowing or indication that Star Platinum could use this ability, other than them being "similar stands".
Jotaro: You, suck. Also I can stop time now.
    DIO: Bullshit! How!?
    Jotaro: We have similar stands.
DIO: What kind of leap in logic is that!?
  • Brick Joke:
    • At the start of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Part 1) in 6 Minutes, Jotaro locks himself in a prison cell because he thought Star Platinum was a ghost, then Joseph corrects him and tells him that it's a Stand. During the final battle of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Part 2) in 9 Minutes, DIO kills Joseph by draining his blood, with Joseph's spirit telling Jotaro that this is what an actual ghost looks like.
    • Before the heroes enter DIO's mansion in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Part 2) in 9 Minutes, Iggy chooses to leave instead of going inside, as he knows he is destined to die in Araki's work, preventing his canon death by Vanilla Ice. At the end of Jotaro's fight with DIO, Iggy arrives to kill DIO with his farts.
  • The Cameo:
    • Phantom Blood: Tsuyu Asui in place of the frog Zeppeli punches.
    • Battle Tendency:
    • My Hero Academia:
      • Izuku watches Kaggyfilms' reaction to the first season video.
        Izuku: He stole my layout.
    • Stardust Crusaders:
      • The pig that Polnareff finds in the Indian toilet is Porky Pig.
      • The Kool-Aid Man bursts through the wall of DIO's mansion to save Polnareff from Vanilla Ice.
    • Beastars:
      • Giorno Giovanna shows up out of nowhere after Louis announces that he's going to "become the next Beastar" and we get this gem:
    Giorno: Scusi?
    Louis: Beastar, not gangstar.
    Giorno: Oh, mi dispiaci. (leaves)
    Louis: "Gang-star" sounds stupid.
    • Demon Slayer:
      • Kurapika appears after Tanjiro says "kill some spiders" and leaves after he explains he was referring to the demons at Mount Natagumo instead of the Phantom Troupe.
  • Casting Gag:
  • Crimefighting with Cash: In "My Hero Academia in Season 1 in 5 Minutes," Deku asks if it's possible to be a superhero without powers, and All Might says it is, citing Batman and Iron Man as examples... except they're both rich and Deku isn't.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Stain gets himself cornered by Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki who all proceed to kick the shit out of him Golden Wind-style.
Midoriya: "Todd McFarlane sends his regards!"
  • Death by Adaptation: Jotaro banishes Elder D'Arby to the Shadow Realm.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Polnareff complains about why Elder D'Arby gets to have a terrible French accent and he doesn't, Joseph corrects him by saying that D'Arby has a Cajun accent. Polnareff argues that this trope is in effect and that Cajun is still a terrible French accent.
  • Homage Derailment:
    • Phantom Blood in 5½ Minutes: The memetic "How Many Breads" scene from at the original is made fun of, being framed as Dio flubbing his lines in-universe.
Jonathan: "Dio! How many souls have you consumed!!?"
      Jonathan: "I— Hold on, What?"
Dio: "Oh god— Oh, how embarrassing- you know, I was gonna say 'how much bread'. But then I thought 'how many slices' of bread, then just 'how many breads'. Heh, kinda funny, right?"
Jonathan: "Oh yeah! No, don't worry about it; I do it all the time."
    • My Hero Academia in 5 Minutes: The iconic moment of Midoriya asking for All Might's opinion on the former becoming a hero is subvertednote .
Midoriya: "All-Might, is there any way I could be a superhero? Even though I don't have quirk?!"note
      All Might: "Yes."
      Midoriya: "Wait, really?"
    • Stardust Crusaders [Part 2] In 9 Minutes:
      • DIO and Jotaro play out the moment from the original where they slowly approach each other to do battle, only this time DIO cuts off Jotaro before he finishes his line.
DIO: "Oh? You're approaching me? Instead of running away, you're coming right to me!"
Jotaro: "I have to move closer if I'm gonna kick your-"
(DIO tosses a bunch of knives into Jotaro)
        Jotaro: "-Ass..." (collapses)
      • Like the original final battle, DIO closes in on Jotaro to finish him off, which is supposed to be followed up by their final clash and DIO's death. Before any of that can happen, Iggy jumps out of nowhere onto DIO's face and farts on him. A few seconds later, DIO's head explodes.
        DIO: "....What?-"
        (Explodes)
  • Insistent Terminology: Stroheim isn't a "Nazi". He's simply a "German soldier from the late 1930s".
    Speedwagon: So, you're a Nazi?
Stronheim: (walks around doing a Nazi salute) ACH! Just because I'm a major in ze German military in ze late 1930s, you can't just go around and accuse everyone you don't like of being a Nazi!
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Momo has no issue talking to Tokoyami, who can only make bird sounds.
Momo: I just don't get it; like, how does your quirk work? Is the bird head a part of it or is your mom a crow?
    Tokoyami: (squawks)
Momo: Who the hell is Brandon Lee? (Dark Shadow crushes her under its fist)
  • Kick the Dog: Literally; the Phantom Blood video makes a Running Gag out of Dio doing horrible things to Jonathan's dog Danny, from literally kicking it to shooting it to throwing it into an incinerator to kicking it into a woodchipper. And eventually frying the poor thing with eye lasers after freezing it — and it keeps showing up alive and well every time.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Throughout Phantom Blood in 5½ Minutes, Dio constantly torments and kills Jonathan's dog Danny. Nearly a century later in Stardust Crusaders [Part 2] In 9 Minutes, DIO is ultimately defeated by Iggy the dog, who says that was for Danny as well.
  • Mood Whiplash: Jonathan's death in Phantom Blood in 5 1/2 minutes carries the brisk and humorous pace up until Dio actually comprehends Jonathan is dead. He then takes the time to somberly sing as the ship goes down... by Waxing Lyrical to songs made by his namesake.
  • Mythology Gag: Stain's voice in "My Hero Academia Season 2 in 8 Minutes" is Lani's Batman voice when the group did a let's play for Batman: Arkham Knight.
Nick Lani: Today's heroes are all posers! That's a Stain-fact!
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent: Enforced when Jotaro and the gang meet Polnareff:
Polnareff: Bonjour! I am ze comic relief! My name is Polnareff, and I-
Joseph: Whoa, uh, we're dropping the terrible accents.
    Polnareff: Quoi?! But why?!
Kakyoin: Because the other two parts took place in Europe, but now we're going through Asia, so...
Polnareff: (Dropping the accent) Ah, no, I get it.
  • Not So Stoic: Jotaro drops his serious tone when Joseph reveals that Holly is sick.
Jotaro: (while tearing up) "Wait, Mommy's sick?!"
  • Running Gag:
    • My Hero Academia:
    • Battle Tendency:
      • People Waxing Lyrical based on the origins of their names.
Wammuu: Thanks for waking us up before you went-went!
    • Stardust Crusaders:
      • Joseph's terrible luck when it comes to vehicles, starting with a plane.
        Jotaro: "Something wrong, Grandpa?"
Joseph: "I just remembered I have a really bad history with planes-"
(Their plane explodes, with a Smash Cut to a Chinese Restaurant)
        Avdol: No more planes.
      • Later, when the gang boards a boat.
Jotaro: "Alright, Grandpa. Do we have to worry about boats?"
Joseph: "Nah, I've never had a problem with a boat before-"
(Smash Cut to a life raft)
Joseph: "So the boat exploded. But that doesn't mean all boats are bad-"
(Smash Cut to another life raft)
Joseph: "So that boat was a monkey. I blame you for this, Jotaro."
      • This joke culminates with the end of the second part of Stardust Crusaders, where the plane Jotaro and Joseph fly home on spontaneously explodes without warning.
      • Jotaro seems to be the only one that finds it odd how Iggy can talk, and always pauses to remark on it.
        Jotaro: "We cool?"
        Iggy: "Yeah, we're cool."
        Jotaro: "...Hold up."
    • Beastars:
      • The phrase when "If you’re going to use a reference as a metaphor…" whenever a character makes reference to a something relevant happening on-screen and one person doesn't understand it.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Invoked by Uraraka, who gets pissed off when Aoyama asks her about her relationship with Midoriya, prompting her to get angry at the idea she's defined by that and then beat Thirteen out of sheer anger.
  • Shout-Out: My Hero Academia: The scene of the three boys repeatedly kicking Stain is right out of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Invoked in Stardust Crusaders Part 2. Iggy bails from the group prior to the Vanilla Ice fight, saving him from the brutal fate his original counterpart had. He later shows up to permanently put down DIO in Jotaro's place as revenge for what he did to Danny.
Iggy: Yeah, nah. Sorry gentlemen, but I know what story I'm in. One step in there and it's 'does the dog die dot fucking com'. But not today. Today, Iggy lives. Peace. (leaves)
Kakyoin: More like man's best Fair-Weather Friend.
Avdol: Kind of feels like I should take a hint.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Tokoyami, after spending the whole time sqwuaking like a bird, talks for real during his exam. It throws his opponent completely off guard, letting him score a win.
Tsuyu: "Tokoyami, we need a distraction!"
    Tokoyami: "Yeah, okay."
    Ectoplasm: "You can talk!?"
  • Take That!:
    • Jojo's strict rules around evading copyright infringement (because every character is some kind of music reference) is constantly mocked.
      • When Speedwagon introduces himself:
George Joestar: Who the hell is this guy?
        Speedwagon: R.E.O-
Jonathan: Shut up, or they'll sue us to death!
Speedwagon: Even SPEEDWAGON infringes the copyright!
      • When Stroheim reveals Santana (who in the English localization and dub is changed Sanviento):
Stroheim: Speaking of, I'd like you to meet Santana. We found him in a cave.
Speedwagon: You've unleashed a great evil!
Santana: Yes, the power of the Pillar Men!
Speedwagon: No, trademark lawyers! They hear your name, they're gonna eat us alive!
      • Oingo and Boingo's names in the Stardust Crusaders video are blatantly censored (complete with black boxes over their mouths).
Oingo: Sup dipshits?! My name's O-
        Robotic voiceover: Zenyatta.
Boingo: And my name is Bo-
        Robotic voiceover: Mondatta.
Oingo: And together we are the-
        Robotic voiceover: Zenyatta-Mondatta Brothers.
        Polnareff: Jo, what is happening?
Joseph: Copyright is a strap-on toting bitch, Polnareff.
    • Jonathan remarks at how boring all the side characters like Dire and Straizo are in Phantom Blood.
Jonathan: I haven't fought any of them, and I'm already kind of bored.
    • Stronheim being a Nazi makes characters a lot more uncomfortable than in canon. And he himself is also much more vile an individual.
Joseph: Why is it so hard to get rid of you Nazis?
Stroheim: YOU! WILL NOT! REPLACE US!
    • The cast poke fun at the official dub of Stardust Crusaders for dropping all of the non-American accents, despite there being several characters with a multitude of nationalities.
    • DIO and Hol Horse discuss Stardust Crusaders' Arc Fatigue.invoked
DIO: And you don't think having nine more Stand Users based off the Egyptian Gods is a little much?
Hol Horse: I'm tellin' ya, it'll kill. People love this shit. Helps segment the fight, give em a theme.
DIO: *Sigh* But we already did the whole Tarot Card theme. It seems like we should have done one or the other, now it just feels like we're dragging it out.
Hol Horse: Yeah, but it's Egypt, right? Gotta have an Egypt theme.
    • Tanjiro meeting Zenitsu in for the first time is laden with disbelief and snark.
Zenitsu: I'm Zenitsu. I'm a total pants pissing coward, a shameless lech, I can't stop SCREAMING, and I'm only useful when I'm unconscious!
Tanjiro: Wow, the audience must hate you!
Zenitsu: Actually, they say I'm relatable.
      Tanjiro: That's fucked up...
    • Everyone in the My Hero Academia videos hate Mineta, who in canon is a lecherous Jerk with a Heart of Gold and The Scrappy for fans.invoked
Midoriya: (Meeting Mineta for the first time) Ooh... I don't like him...
    • This gem:
Principal Nezu: "I literally HATE HUMANS! You think that would be a conflict of interest, but honestly I'm no different from a majority of school staff."
    • Dabi makes one towards J. K. Rowling after Toga makes a joke about his name being similar to Dobby.
  • There Are No Therapists: Several characters lampshade how students can't seek emotional help.
Todoroki: "Is there an on-site therapist, or-?"
    [later]
All Might: "We need to get an on-site therapist."
  • Twisted Echo Cut: Much like in DBZA, a lot of the jokes and scenes in this series are structured in this fashion, where the dialogue of a scene will fold into the next.
    • The Dragon Prince Season 1 uses this with every scene transition:
Soren: It'll be so hard not to murder you later.
      Callum: What's that?
Rayla: (offscreen) I said I can't murder them! (cut to next scene)
    • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Part 2) in 9 Minutes has this scene folding between Jotaro and Alessi's confrontation that goes seamlessly into Joseph and Avdol's fight with Mariah.
      Alessi: Speaking of kids...
Jotaro: Fuck no, we're skipping you.
Alessi: Oh, come on! My arc is great; it's chock-full of child—
      Joseph: DICK!
      Avdol: What?
(cut to Avdol being magnetized to Joseph's crotch by Mariah's Bastet)
Joseph: I SAID "GET OFF MY DICK"!
  • Yaoi Fangirl: After Bastet has Joseph and Avdol magnetized together in a compromising position, Mariah states that instead of killing them she'd rather ship them instead. Avdol considers killing them to be more merciful.

How Many Breads

Johnathan and Dio enact a famous exchange from Phantom Blood, only to realize something's weird with it.

How well does it match the trope?
