"Hop aboard the Aaron Express! Wahoo!"
RemyRaccoon

Ren Hewat (b. 5 September 1993), better known by their internet alias RemyRaccoon, Remy for short, and previously known as ValeforXD, Vale for short, is an up-and-coming video game critic on YouTube. Using an energetic style and mostly positive attitude, they talk about a variety of games, both old and new, well-known and obscure, giving an honest opinion on them. Though they have been covering new releases, they have slowly been delving into obscure territory (and hopes to continue this way).

Originally starting as one half (or, as they insist, two-and-a-half eighths) of the Let's Play Quartet The Acquaintances, Ren began making video game reviews on the side whenever their busy three videos a day schedule would allow them. However, as video output began to decline, Ren began to focus on their own channel, until finally The Acquaintances stopped uploading, and Ren had as much time as they needed to work on their own, now substantially more popular web series.

Their earlier videos, for the most part, were down-to-Earth reviews with a few jokes and memes sprinkled in for good measure. It wasn't until Scooby Doo! Night of 100 Frights and My Little Pony Games that they began to develop a more eccentric and surreal style to their videos, while videos such as An Aussie Reviews Forza Horizon 3 remained a little more straight-faced while still delivering on silly jokes and comments. Also, they're Australian, which of course leads to a lot of humor stereotypical of the Australian people.

Tropes found on RemyRaccoon

  • Accentuate the Negative: Ford VS Chevy.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Parodying the "place video game in device incapable of playing video games" trope popularized by JonTron, Vale places the box of Scooby Doo! Night of 100 Frights in the toaster. It works.
    • In Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank, when they go to sin the section on the Gemlik base where turrets are firing at you and you need to shoot them through a hole located just before the turrets, Vale simply long jumps their way through without getting hit.
  • Angrish: Vale introduces their favourite racing game of all time.
"Ford vs Chevy! Amazing speed! Realistic handling! Intense and emotional story! So much FUCKING CONTENT GHHGEIHFGIWHFBCIERBCUIEBRURV"
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Forza Horizon 3, after getting a Bubble-O Bill/10 on the rating scale, ascends to Heaven, at which point God himself notices and demands it sit on the holy chair because it's "hella lit fam".
  • Audience Participation: Ren allowed viewers to submit sins and wins for the games they tackled on the Everything Right and Wrong With series.
  • Bag of Holding: Stick your hand into Remy's tail and you'll actually find {{Hammerspace a pocket dimension!}} They say it can store an infinite amount of things so long as any object being put inside of it doesn't exceed the length of the tail. No carting whole houses around, unfortunately.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Vale flies off the handle when sinning the nanotech upgrade on planet Dobbo in Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank 2. They add a sin for every f-bomb.
    • Remy when they discover Spiritfarer's "extremely inaccurate depiction of raccoons."
  • Bizarro Universe:
"How would you feel if... I dunno, a dog walked up to you in the middle of the street, swooped you up in its mouth and carried you to the pet store to force you to buy it some treats? How about you ask before you pick a living being up and take advantage of its unusual traits, Ratchet? Asshole."
  • Blatant Lies: "I'm gonna upload every two weeks!" A month-and-a-half later...
  • Book Ends: The last sin in the Ratchet and Clank series mirrors the first sin of Ratchet and Clank 3, being a disclaimer for how much they love the game/series.
  • Broke the Rating Scale: Or rather, Broke the Sin Counter.
    • The first instance is in Size Matters where the use of "l33t" causes them to set the sin counter to 1,333,333,337.
    • Another example is when Full Frontal Assault uses one too many outdated memes, literally breaking the sin counter and making it display random shit (Sometimes not even numbers) after every sin.
  • Callback: Vale constantly (and sarcastically) mocks the fact that Ratchet and Clank 3 uses a lot of planets, guns and even enemies from the original Ratchet an Clank game, due to being set in the same galaxy. When they get around to making a sin parody video for the 2016 Ratchet and Clank reboot, they land on Novalis and begins to say "We get it! Ratchet and Clank 1 was a thing!" before realizing their mistake.
  • Butt-Monkey: Limpy, in Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "We get it! Ratchet and Clank 1 was a thing!" The catch phrase has been lampshaded everytime it has been used since.
    • "I've done it before, and I'll do it again?"
    • And of course, "I DON'T LIKE CHAAAAAANGE"
  • Caustic Critic: Partially subverted. While Ford VS Chevy definitely fits the bill, an even chunk of Vale's reviews seem to be both positive and negative, offering more constructive criticism rather than straight up tearing it to shreds. Even though they dislike NieR, they could tell the game was a labour of love, plus it led to the creation of its fantastic sequel.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While playing Story of the Blanks:
"The curse had befallen her this very night. She had the mark... She had to go!"
Vale: "Listen, if someone has a cutie mark on their flank, that does not affect their ability to work, don't judge your employees on their appearance! Incidentally, you're one ugly sonuvabitch."
  • Complaining About Shows You Don't Watch: Vale admits they were unfair in their Ford VS Chevy review, as they never actually finished it, only making it about a fifth of the way through the game before flushing it down the toilet.
  • Control Freak: Ren has often admitted to preferring to work alone, which is why they've almost never collaborated with any other creator on the platform. They have said they like to be in control of all aspects of production, which includes editing and drawing the character stills of Remy that appear in new videos.
  • Couch Gag: Starting with the Nintendo Switch Review, every title card has had a new quote or phrase against it, including:
"Maybe the real 10k sub special is the friends we made along the way!"
"This episode has been modified to fit your primitive screen"
"You have chosen a three wood. May I suggest a putter?"
    "Kerwan is my city"
    • Almost every Everything Wrong With episode is also accompanied with "in [X] [Y]'s or less, such as " in 43 ass shakes or less" with Quest for Booty.
  • Cutaway Gag: Most notably, in Pokken Tournament, where Vale discusses the ludicrously enthusiastic voice acting and imagines it in other games, such as Metal Gear Solid 3.
Vale, as the Boss: "The most important thing is to HAVE FUN"
  • Dance Party Ending: Near the end of Scooby Doo! Night of 100 Frights.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Their earliest video, Ford VS Chevy: The Worst Racing Game Ever, was way more humorous than it was informative. Though they have since come out and said that the game isn't as bad as they said it was, the video prominently features them dissing on almost every single thing in it, sometimes overreacting. They said they found their groove when they made the Guitar Hero/Rock Band review, but also seems to be even more comfortable using Remy as their channel mascot.
  • Elephant in the Living Room: Assumedly part of the reasoning behind Top 10 Secrets You Might Have Missed in YouTube Rewind 2016 (feat. PewDiePie in the Title). It ignores a lot of the up-and-coming YouTubers of the last year or so and shines the spotlight on irrelevant YouTubers - or, in some cases, Viners - while making references to terrible memes and trends and outright ignoring controversies such as the Fine Bros' attempt to trademark the word 'react' or h3h3productions being sued.
  • Even the Subtitler Is Stumped: Before announcing their favourite racing game in Top 10 Favourite Racing Games, they jokingly give the award to Ford VS Chevy, only to erupt into a fit of screaming and flailing. It's so incomprehensible that the text on the screen simply reads "Haha benis", "Nick sucks ass" and "[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[".
  • Excuse Plot: Why does Vale have to review a bunch of subjectively terrible games based on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic? Because they wake up with their avatar being stolen and replaced with a pony, and The Voice tells them they have to as a punishment for reviewing Ford VS Chevy so terribly, and if they don't, he won't return their avatar. Menial stuff.
  • The Faceless: Not entirely. Though their reviews focus on keeping their face out of the limelight, there have been a few instances where their face has been visible - How NOT To Use Miitomo and My Little Pony Games, for example. They appeared on camera during much of the Ford VS Chevy review.
  • Flat "What": Vale's reaction to being forced to review even more My Little Pony games.
  • Faux Horrific: In Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank (2016):
"Oh no, the most devilish of all contraptions, one that shall forever halt my progress on a count of its sheer complexity! ...Three buttons."
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • If you pause at the right moment during the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth video, you can see the script for the next minute and also a few lines previous. Though slightly cut off, you can see some cut dialogue.
    • Try stopping whenever they show a screenshot of their web browser. Sometimes, there may be some very...unsanitary tabs open.
  • Four-Point Scale:
    • Forza Horizon 3 gets the illustrious Bubble-O-Bill/10.
    • Freedom Planet gets seven illegal bestiality pictures/10.
    • Ori and the Blind Forest got eight little fuckin' fairies/10.
  • Gay Moment:
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: They nearly chuck a fit when they're asked to drive around town and pick up tires, most of which would not be able to fit in their car, let alone how they're supposed to get out and pick all of the up and place them in the car within the time limit.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • In Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault, Vale remarks that those who say LOL out loud should be sentenced to death, before a clip of them saying "he fuckin' dead lol" plays. It's okay, though, Australia doesn't have the death penalty, so they're safe.
    • During Wholesome Games for When You're Stuck at Home:
"Look at this extremely inaccurate depiction of raccoons! I am sick of us being misrepresented as CONNIVING, CHONKY LITTLE CROOKS! ...Huh? Whaddaya mean I stole the CinemaSins format way back when? Th-that's different. Shut the fuck up."
  • Jump Scare: In Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank, Vale says that no one has spoken yet and it's beginning to feel weird, before Clank interrupts with a loud and distorted "INTERESTING".
  • Large Ham:
    • God, when aren't they a large ham?
    • Incidentally, their favourite antagonist is Dr Nefarious, for whom they take off sins in Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank 3 for his "extreme hamminess."
  • Laugh Track:
    • Follows the "I've seen too much hentai to know where this is going" when a tentacle monster appears in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. Complete with credits in which they play every role, including Demi Devimon, Kanyemon, The entirety of Black Veil Brides, the little kid from the Jam Sessions commercial and MARK ZUCKERBERG. valeforXD, of course, is played by Laura Bailey.
    • When Remy shows off their LittleBigPlanet 2 level in Wholesome Games for When You're Stuck at Home, they play a laugh track when a monkey character walks on screen and asks them to listen to him fart.
  • Low Count Gag: In "Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank (The Movie)", Vale claims the Spiral of Death is fired towards the camera just so the three people who watched the movie in 3D got their money's worth.
  • Memetic Mutationinvoked: Surprisingly, Ren is a pretty big advocate of memes and meme culture. Most of their videos, while not containing too many memes within the main part of the video itself, have memes right at the end, after the endslate.
  • Mondegreen Gag:
    • Scooby Doo pronouncing the Headless Specter in a way that sounds more like sphincter or sex toy.
    • Chandelure saying "FUCK" when entering a battle in Pokken Tournament.
  • Mood Whiplash: When Vale plays Banned from Equestria in My Little Pony Games. What a bright and colourful game! Nothing terrible and impure could possibly happen to - why is he putting his penis in that pony?
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: Most of My Little Pony Games can be applied to this, especially their reactions to Twilight Sparkle Pregnant and Banned From Equestria.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • In the Top 10 Favourite Racing Games video, talking about the radio DJ in Burnout 3:
"Excuse me! I am trying to listen to my emo music! From First to Last are great and here you are interrupting them just so you can tell me that [puts on horrible American accent] "the sky is looking fucking great today!" FUCK YOU!"
    • Another from the same video:
"Fuck you, Konami. Konami? More like...Can't-nami."
    • From the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth video:
"Though, they really gotta step up their game in the monster design department. This is a blob. This is a Sunflora. This is a literal piece of shit. And this... What the fuck is this?! What the FUCK even is thi-"
    • The two "what the fuuuuuuck" instances in My Little Pony Games.
  • Pun: In Pokken Tournament:
"Though, yes, let's address the Donphan in the room. Geddit? 'Cause he's an elephant?"
"It feels like a Mega Kick in the nuts. Get it?! 'Cause Mega Kick's a- Okay, I'll stop."
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • In Everything Wrong with Ratchet and Clank 2, they spend a great deal of time discussing why Snivelak is such a terrible level in an otherwise fantastic game, from the difficulty curve being thrown off to the boss being a lengthy turret section.
  • Rapid-Fire Typing: Technically clicking, but they do this while playing the apple tree minigame in Banned From Equestria.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: They mouth off about microtransactions in My Little Pony Games with little remorse.
  • Running Gag:
    • This mostly applies to their Everything Wrong With Ratchet and Clank series:
"We get it, Ratchet and Clank 1 was a thing!"
3000 years into the future, and [thing] is [still not a thing].
How might a robot [perform a typically human action]?
      Ship level.
      Clank level.
    • Running Gagged: They refused to use the "I DON'T LIKE CHAAAANGE!" joke after Into the Nexus. However, they eventually can't contain it after the Plumber's voice was changed in the Ratchet and Clank movie, causing an explosion and a huge burst in sins.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • After playing Pinkie Pie Adventure:
"You know what? That's it. Fool me once? I'm done. Finito. No twice about it.
    • In Everything Wrong With Size Matters, they choose not to play the Challenge Mode because the game really frustrated them.
  • Self-Deprecation:
    • The How Not to Use Miitomo video is full of it.
    • In My Little Pony Games:
"Ugh, my head... What did I do last night? I can't have done anything, I'm a 23 year old who doesn't drink and has no friends. Livin' the dream, Vale... Livin' the dream."
    • After covering all the Ratchet and Clank games in "Everything Wrong With" videos, Vale made an "Everything Wrong With" video about themself.
  • Sensory Abuse: The meme at the end of Everything Wrong With Secret Agent Clank wears this trope proudly on its shoulder.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Their avatar was previously based on the Phoenix Wright pose, but was changed due to them never having played Ace Attorney. Plus, they just hated it. No eyebrows, man.
    • Their name, obviously! Valefor is the very first aeon Yuna summons in Final Fantasy X.
    • In a very literal example, Vale gives shout-outs to channels whom they believe deserve the exposure at the end of almost every video starting with An Aussie Reviews Forza Horizon 3. They range from channels they've made friends with, to channels they just really enjoy, to even a shoutout to their ex-partner's Twitch channel.
    • At the beginning of Instead of An Actual Video, Here's An Update, they start the video with a clip from fellow 'Tuber Petronious, mocking his own mockery of update videos by calling him a "silly bitch".
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: In My Little Pony Games, You Say Run plays as they try to kick apples off of a tree.
  • Special Edition Title: The opening for Scooby Doo! Night of 100 Frights.
  • Take That!: During Guitar Hero Live VS Rock Band 4, they randomly ring up the fact that they think the key change in Livin' on a Prayer is "fucking terrible".
  • The Stinger: After the end slate of My Little Pony Games, Vale is shown receiving a new avatar. They remark that it looks like "an amputee patient drew it with forks tied around their stumps" and wished to keep the pony avatar.
  • The Teaser: At the end of My Thoughts on E3 2016, a teaser is shown - an orange pony of the MLP variety is shown standing in darkness, before sighing and stating, "what the fuck am I dong?" before the words "next time on valeforXD" ap pear on screen. Though those words weren't true, as two reviews popped up inbetween then, this was a teaser for My Little Pony Games.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: After playing My Little Pony: Friendship Celebration and finding Rarity (or, a McDonald's toy version of her) passed out from a tea overdose...
"Here's ya fuckin' tea, Rarity, ya bitch. *pegs several teabags at her* Suits you to a T!"
  • Top Ten List: Top 10 Favourite Racing Games,Top 10 Secrets You Might Have Missed in YouTube Rewind 2016 (feat. PewDiePie in the Title) and Top 10 Unpopular Gaming Opinions.
  • Unusual Euphemism:
    • "Holy tartare sauce on a chicken nugget, is it satisfying. Try it, it's actually pretty good."
    • "As true as Shaun Micailef makes me crack a fat..."
  • Viewer Pronunciation Confusion: They have trouble pronouncing David Beauregard's last name in A Crack in Time, eventually just calling him "David Burger".
