• Abusive Parents: Most of the characters come from jerkass parents.
  • Not only does Jouichirou dump his 16 year old son at Tootsuki with no way to support himself, but he also once left him at a circus for a year when he was a kid, where it’s implied that Soma was molested by the clowns. Jouichirou’s name in Soma's phone contacts is "The person Who I wish would love me", and some of Soma's memories include Jouichirou beating him up.
  • Ikumi was verbally abused by her father just because he didn't like her voice as a kid.
  • Takumi and Isami got kicked out of their home and shipped to Japan without any means to sustain themselves.
• Accent Adaptation: Unlike the official dub, Takumi has a heavy and over-the-top Italian accent.
• Adaptational Jerkass: Almost everyone is subject of this if they are not crazy. The most glaring example is Jouichirou, implied that he scarred Soma mentally.
• Ass Shove: Takumi apparently never leaves home without a "Goose Caboose".
• Ax-Crazy:
  • Ibusaki. Growing up in an insane asylum is probably part of it.
• Beleaguered Assistant: Ryou follows Alice around, has to obey to all her whims, no matter how stupid they are, while he mumbles how he will kill himself afterwards.
  • Episode 10 introduces Akira as Jun's assistant. He is in charge of running everything in the Spice Shack, to the point Jun just finds out that they had a dog, only because Akira tells her that he had to feed it.
• Black Comedy: The running theme of the series, with a lot of deaths.
  • In Chapter 4, Soma and Megumi decide to go for ingredients. To the shock of everyone in the group, Soma fights a bear, with Megumi struggling to shoot it. Not helped by the fact that both Soma and the bear are telling her to shoot the evil one, with poor Megumi even doubting about who to listen to.
  Megumi: Why did I have to shoot the cubs?
  Soma: No, Megumi. Why did you get to shoot the cubs.
  • In Chapter 7. Alice actually kills a person with a poisoned dish. Everyone wants to eat from her booth because "Someone died because it was so good", to Ikumi's bafled surprise.
• Casting Couch: Instead of cooking something to stay at the dorms, Fumio made Soma pass another kind of test.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Quite a few of the characters, but special mention goes to Alice, Dojima, and Soma himself.
• Competition Freak: Soma is even more so than the original version. In Episode 12, after he spends the day having a friendly cook off along with Ikumi just for the fun of it, but when he listens to Kinu admit her defeat, he goes berserk, starts craving more victories, returns to his old crazy self, and decides to return to school to keep beating everyone else.
• Cute and Psycho:
  • Yuuki cheerfully tells that she raises animals, and then slaughters them to feed their children with their meat.
  • Alice. She used poison in her food (but used all of it on only one plate), and unintentionally misplaced a detonator inside a cow. When Ikumi calls her "Evil", she retorts that she's "Adorable".
• Cute, but Cacophonic: Urara's hosting is so unintelligible that she needs subtitles (and even then, sometimes they fail to undertand what she's saying), and still has a lot of fanboys despite this. She momentarly changes to a raspy baritone when introducing Soma like a Heel.
• Depraved Homosexual: In this version, Hinako is even more creepy towards Megumi, to the point Megumi refers to Hinako as "sex offender"
• The Dog Bites Back: Megumi snaps at Soma in Episode 6 for his bossing her around.
• Embarrassing Middle Name: At first Gin Dojima is introduced as "Dojima Fuckin' Gin" as an exclamation of his fame, but Jun's flashback in Episode 12 reveals that "Fuckin'" is actually his given middle name.
  Gin: Fuckin' is my given middle name cuz my dad is a dick.
• Embarrassing Nickname: According to Jun, Jouichirou is the only person who calls her "Spice Gremlin". When Soma called her that, Jun punched him immediately.
• Experimented in College: Both Jouichirou and Gin (separately) slur about their college days as "the best fucking years of my life" in a suggestive and lewd tone.
• I'm a Humanitarian: Treated as a joke In-Universe.
  • In Senzaemon's opening speech, he jokes that the 99% that won't graduate will be ingredients, only to brush it off as a joke, and then saying that they won't survive.
  Aw, come on!!
  • In Isshiki's nightmare, Soma ate his father and became super strong, while Ibusaki tells that they ate Marui. Isshiki counters by attacking them back before waking up.
• I Ate WHAT?!:
  • Soma directly asks Ryoko if her concoction is bull semen. Ryoko says that the question is too specific.
  • For Hinako's test, Takumi made a duck dish literally out of his butt (the other students point this out, but Hinako eats it anyway). Soma makes Megumi hunt a bear and cook fried bear dick with sauce made from the testicles. Hinako liked it, though.
• Ignored Enamored Underling: Hisako is this. She constantly thinks about being "under Erina".
• Jerkass Has a Point: Erina is challenging Godabayashi because his club is the principal source of diarrhea at school. And she also wants a 5th kitchen.
• Lethal Chef: In the very first minute, Soma accidentally poisoned Yaeko. Apparently, this has happened more than once.
• Made of Incendium: A common element in this series is that Soma or others tend to set a kitchen on fire.
  • In Chapter 1, Soma lit fire to the family restaurant, which makes Jouichirou abandon him at cooking school.
  • In Chapter 4, Takumi's flaming aura sets the kitchen on fire. The entire classroom has to evacuate to a second kitchen, with some firemen down on duty.
  • In Chapter 5, only saying "Shokugeki" inside a kitchen sets the whole place on fire. Shinomiya, Soma and Megumi have to relocate to another place to continue their discussion.
• Missing Mom: Episode 8 has Jouichiro pranking his son early in the morning by telling him that he's trapped in the kitchen by goblins who want to drag him off. Soma rushes in with a 'goblin net', asking frantically, among other things, if they "[brought] back mommy". However, Jouichiro proceeds to reveal his lie that goblins were there, and that he didn't even know what a goblin was. Mildly traumatizing Soma as he simultaneously realizes his father had been lying to him about what happened to his mother.
• Mirror Character: It turns out that Takumi and Isami got booted out of their home by their father (incidentally saying the exact same lines as Jouichirou, but in Italian). Soma immediately relates to him because both have Daddy Issues.
• Motor Mouth: One thing that gets Jun into "professor mode" is mentioning Voltron. According to Akira, it can take days for Jun to wrap it up.
• Mundane Solution: Soma passed Erina's entrance test with corn flakes cereal. With sugar.
• Naked People Are Funny: Isshiki, as per usual. He is so obsessed with nudity, that he even flashes his naked body throught a window, turning a little boy gay. In Episode 12, apparently his naked body is so flashy that it blasts the sun by out-flashing it, and then restores it with another crotch-beam.
• Noblewoman's Laugh: Erina does this laughter a lot, combined with Large Ham whenever she boasts about her status or is about to crush an opponent.
• Open-Minded Parent: In Episode 7, after Isshiki turns a kid gay by flashing him through his window, his mother has this to say.
  Mother: I ACCEPT YOU FOR WHO YOU AREEEE!!!
• Only Sane Man: Megumi is regularly baffled by the absurdity surrounding Soma.
• Potty Failure: Shinomiya expells the guy behind Soma because he could smell from the stage that he shit his pants.
• Pun: Ikumi makes a "meat" pun in most of her lines during her introduction.
• Pyromaniac: Soma is prone to this, to the point of setting on fire the family restaurant after a disagreement with Jouichirou.
• Red Baron:
  • Professor Chapelle introduces himself as ''"The Worst Possible Teacher to Have If You're About to Fail, and Get Kicked Out of ze School". Or "TWPTTHIYATFAGKOOTS" for short.
  • In Episode 8, Fumio reveals that Jouichirou is also known as El Diablo Grande Supreme.
• Relationship Upgrade: Sato and Aoki by the end of Episode 7. Aoki is also pregnant.
• Share the Male Pain: Before the examination, Erina breaks an egg in front of everyone, telling them to picture it as their own genitalia, not helping the psychopath look in her face. Everyone except Soma end up fleeing.
• Shout-Out: The person Megumi wants to make proud is Cooking Mama.
• Sore Loser: Unlike the original version, Soma goes into screaming fits whenever he loses to other people.
• Surrounded by Idiots: Fuyumi mumbles this, since the others seem to have forgotten her name, Donato makes obvious questions about Shinomiya's dish despite being a French cuisine chef too, and how she is forced to use a cabbage costume too.
• Unexplained Recovery: Professor Chapelle literally explodes of happiness, only to return for the Training Camp. Isshiki also survives a knife to the head from Soma (reviving without explanation and acquiring knife immunity).
• Verbal Backspace: In Episode 4, Professor Chapelle introduces the alumni as the tormentors- I mean, mentors.
• Vocal Dissonance: In Episode 7, Isshiki turns a little boy gay, who then adopts a baritone.
  Kid: I can't look awaaaaay!!! (changes to a deeper voice) I'M GAY NOW.
