Ethan Mars Is Gay is a YouTube Poop by Deepercutt based on the video game Heavy Rain. It begins with Ethan deciding to not take a shower at the beginning of the game, which inexplicably leads into a bizarrely altered version of the game's events. It is Deepercutt's longest YTP.
Provides examples of:
- Adaptational Heroism: In this version of events, Scott Shelby is just as good a person as he initially appears, showing up in the finale to help Ethan free Shaun and then fight Jayden.
- Adaptational Villainy: Jayden has a few more rough edges than in the game, acting more aggressive and claiming that he ate Shaun in front of Ethan. And then it turns out that he's the Origami Killer.
- Adorably Precocious Child: If Scott Shelby is to be believed, he is only ten years old...and yet he's taking on a murder/kidnapping case that adults struggle with.
- All Just a Dream: The video ends with Ethan waking up again and going about his day. Notably, this last scene has almost no Manipulative Editing whatsoever...
- Batter Up!: Shortly after Shaun's disappearance, either Jayden or Blake throws a bat at Ethan from offscreen.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Shaun asks Ethan to "make him fly" on the seesaw. Ethan subsequently flings Shaun in the air and causes him to get lost.
- Been There, Shaped History: Ethan Mars helped create Sonic the Hedgehog, as we see him drawing concept art of him early in the video.
- Big "NO!":
- Ethan's reaction to be asked to help his wife carry things from the car inside. He immediately gets over it.
- Ethan lets out another when Jayden tells him he ate Shaun.
- Bittersweet Ending: Ignoring the All Just a Dream twist at the very end, the story closes with Ethan reunited with Shaun and Jayden dead—although Scott fell victim to Jayden pulling a Taking You with Me.
- Brick Joke:
- "Hi, I'm Scott!" gets a nod in the climax as Scott fights Jayden to the strains of "Bollywood" (the first boss song).
- After Ethan rescues Shawn, Shawn simply says "I knew you could make me fly!"
- Demoted to Extra: Madison is only given two appearances. One is a Freeze-Frame Bonus cameo in Jayden's ARI fantasy, the other is when Gordi Kramer is watching a video of her being attacked by Ethan...and exploding.
- Disproportionate Retribution: The store owner telling Scott he's dead to him for declaring "Fuck inhalers!" and leaving the store after the store owner refused to give him the box.
- Does Not Like Spam: Shaun hates strawberry flavored chewies.Cole Phelps: Looks like I made a mistake.
- Easter Egg: Back when YouTube allowed annotations, viewers could access hidden bonus videos by clicking on them in certain scenes. One of them included Jack Black teaching children how to make origami, until he gets arrested by the police who mistake him for the Origami Killer.
- For Want Of A Nail: Parodied; everything that happened in the video happened because Ethan didn't take a shower after he woke up.
- Foreshadowing:
- Jayden claiming to have eaten Shaun.
- Similarly, Jayden's angry reaction to Scott randomly showing up.
- Good Bad Bugs: Blake bears witness to an in-universe one, as he sees a random police officer passing through Ethan during one of their interrogations.
- Good Cop/Bad Cop: A Subverted Trope; Jayden is less of a Reasonable Authority Figure than in the game. If anything, it's "Bad Cop, Less-Bad Cop."
- I'm a Humanitarian: Jayden at one point claims that he ate Shaun. This claim is later seen to be false.
- Imagine Spot: Scott's shootout in the Kramer mansion is said by onscreen text to have not really happened, commenting on Scott's "wild imagination".
- Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Jayden fires several shots at Scott in the finale, but can't seem to make any hits even when the target is mere feet away. At least in the original game, there was the excuse of him not actually making any shots.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: The store owner claims that Scott is his son.
- Missed Him by That Much: After one of his many fights with Blake, Jayden discovers that Ethan escaped the interrogation room and storms out to find him. He clearly didn't bother to check under the desk where Ethan was actually hiding.
- Mood Whiplash:
- We get a scene where Ethan and Shaun tragically die in an explosion... and then The Nostalgia Critic rewrites the scene to make it less tragic, giving us a Non Sequitur gag instead. And then Shadow the Hedgehog guns Ethan down, to the Critic's confusion.
- Scott Shelby reveals to the store owner that he is a ten year old boy. The owner then realizes that Shelby is his long lost son, which prompts Shelby to sadly leave the store...then he remembers that he needs to buy an inhaler and asks for one.
- Non-Indicative Name: There's not much indication in the video that Ethan Mars is actually gay. He does declare to his sons that he's "fucking both of you", which is technically correct.
- Non Sequitur: During the aforementioned scene where Nostalgia Critic rewrites the car crash, he instead makes Ethan stand in place and randomly say "green pants".
- Noodle Incident:
- Blake inquires whether an unseen event was the first time Jayden "fucked" somebody.
- Scott, out of the blue, claims Jayden killed Lauren, who made no prior appearances in the video.
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Scott gets past the guards at Gordi Kramer's place by putting a cardboard box over his head.
- Parental Incest: If Ethan's thoughts on taking a shower with his kids and his willingness to have sex with them were an indication...
- Politically Incorrect Villain: According to Jayden, the Origami Killer "has nothing against white victims"...so he covers their faces in mud, presumably to feel okay about killing them.
- Running Gag: Ethan keeps bringing up showers.
- Sequence Breaking: Ethan at one point takes a Warp Pipe that takes him to the warehouse where Shaun is kept.
- Taking You with Me: Jayden uses Scorpion's weapon to drag Scott with him when he falls into the shredder.
- Wham Shot: Scott shooting the lock on Shaun's cage off.
- Wham Line: Immediately after the above Wham Shot:Jayden: I'm the Origami Killer.
- With Friends Like These...: In the first scene where we see Jayden and Blake together, they're bickering when they're supposed to get information out of Ethan.
- Younger Than They Look: Scott Shelby appears to be a middle-aged man, but he reveals himself to be a ten year old boy.
