    Confirmed Theories

You will be able to dump the bodies in the dumpsters.
An obvious guess, but it still hasn't happened yet.

You will definitely be able to electrocute people.
As seen on the challenges page. There's a picture of Osana Najimi getting shocked.
  • It was put into the August 12th 2015 update, so Confirmed!

In one of the newer updates, there will be a pool.
You'll be able to drown people in it and electrocute a lot of people all at once. The only problem with electrocuting is that it might be a bit too flashy and might attract people from outside. Also, there'll be a pool guard who you'll have to distract or kill.
  • Considering one of the planned rivals is the Swim Team Captain, this kinda goes without saying.
  • A pool isn't in the game (yet?), but you can now drown a rival in the fountain in the courtyard or in the bathroom.
    • Swimming pool confirmed. See here.

Akademi High School is very rich.
That's why there's so few students and such high-quality teachers and facilities.

Info-chan won't be a rival.
Because she's just too powerful and cool. There would be no way to beat her if she was your enemy. She could simply just tell the school what you did and then you'd be in trouble. If you try to say something about what she did, she can get some other students to say that Yandere-chan is lying. Other students must like getting panty shots from Info-chan, so they won't let her leave without a fight.
  • Confirmed, for better or worse. YandereDev originally intended for Info-chan to be the final rival (she was the other yandere mentioned multiple times throughout this Wiki), but changed his mind for unknown reasons – possibly because he does not want her to be killable.

The nurse will be a rival.
It's because her outline is in red, just like Osana Najimi. Also, Info-chan can't send you information about her because it would spoil who her crush is.
  • Confirmed.
    • However, the Nurse we see in the debug builds is the Substitute Nurse. The regular non-rival nurse who will be at school the other nine weeks has yet to appear.
    • Also, the real reason Info-chan can't tell you anything about her is because she has no AI, just like Rival-chan (a.k.a. Original Osana), Counselor Kunihito, the Delinquents, and the Placeholder Club Leaders.

One of the rivals will be a Mary Sue.
Or a deconstruction of the trope. She'll think, "Oh my gosh! I'm so perfect! Who would ever want to hurt me! Like, totally!"
  • Confirmed. Source.
    • Yet also Jossed, in a way. Megami Saiko, the Student Council President, is a classic Sue in the sense that she is absolutely perfect – the richest, smartest, most popular, etc. – and her character bio explicitly states she has no weaknesses. However, she's not naïve in the slightest and nothing about her is Played for Laughs. If anything, she's what happens when a Sue is Played for Drama and pitted against you. So... perhaps she is a deconstruction in a way. Regardless, she seems to know exactly who Yan-chan is and what she's capable of. As the final rival, she'll be very difficult to defeat.
      • Amusingly, there is a more-classic Mary Sue in the game – Mai Waifu – but she's such a blatantly over-the-top example that she becomes a clear Parody Sue.

The "mysterious tapes" are NOT referring to Yandere-chan
YandereDev posted that the mom (and Yan-chan's dad) are away for 10 weeks, but in the tape it's said the mom died when she gave birth to a girl. It just doesn't add up to be about Yandere-chan. However, that was a point back in July 14th of 2015. I (the OP) doesn't really read much into the game's story and lore unless friends share it.
  • This has been known for a while now… it's been confirmed, and said throughout this trope page, that the Yandere mentioned in the tapes is Yandere-chan's mom.
  • Secret Basement Tape 1 clinches it – the girl's name is explicitly stated to be "Ryoba Aishi". Almost certainly Yan-chan's (a.k.a. Ayano Aishi's) mother.

Senpai is a loner.
Who only hangs out with their little sister/childhood best friend. That's why they're always alone.
  • Dev has confirmed that Senpai prefers his solitude and that he's actually not very popular… at least to start.

The masks are a part of the Drama Club.
Since one of the rivals is the Drama Club President, it's a possibility that the placeholder masks in the game a linked to the drama club. The ability to wear a mask certainly leads to many new gameplay possibilities.
  • As of November 2015, the school has been massively expanded. There is a Drama Club room… and yes the masks are in there.

There will be hand-to-hand combat in the game.
It's because of the personalities that the students will have. One of them, yet to be put in, is the Justice Minded persona. These people will follow you until they see you do something bad, which they will report to the authorities. You will have to fight these people and knock them out or kill them to make them stop. If you knock them out, you can put them in a box.
  • Confirmed. If a character with a Heroic or Strict personality sees you commit murder, they will attack you, forcing you to win a quick button mashing minigame to defeat them.

A teacher will be a rival.
That's why they're identified as students. Maybe it's easier to code them as love interests that way. One of them will be a teacher so that you'll have to pair them off with another teacher.
  • Confirmed, sort of. One of the upcoming rivals is stated to be a substitute teacher.

The rivals all have a punny or relevant name.
So far, there's Osana Najimi, who, as her name suggests, is a Patient Childhood Love Interest. In addition, YandereDev said at one point that he would like to give Yandere-chan and Info-chan names along these lines (source). This could mean that the rivals each have a name relating to their role or archetype.
  • Confirmed. Here.
    • The only possible exception is Imouto-chan, Hanako Yamada. That's the Japanese equivalent of Jane Smith and is only meaningful inasmuch as it dovetails with Senpai's just-as-boring name.

Kokona Haruka is involved in some criminal activity.
In the conversation she has on the phone, she seemed to have done something she doesn't want to do again, though there is no context on what she did. However, one of the thing she says is "...H...how much did you say...?..." and the fact that she is willing to consider doing it again right away makes it sound like that she isn't being blackmailed.
  • It's probably Compensated Dating.
    • That's socially unacceptable, but not actually criminal. However, Info-chan also caught her selling her used panties, which is illegal in Japan (and has been since the early 90's).

Kokona Haruka is being paid for sex.
For sure, Kokona is being paid for sex. During lunch on Monday, Kokona shares to Saki Miyu that, and I quote, "Ever since my mom died, my dad's been drinking a lot. Sometimes, when he's drunk, he comes into my room, and...”
—''Kokona telling her friend about her darkest secret
...he comes into her room and cries about his overwhelming debt. He took out a loan from a loan shark to make ends meet after Kokona's mother died, and now the loan shark is constantly raising the interest and threatening to get violent if he doesn't pay up. Kokona sells her panties and does the Compensated Dating to help pay off the debt.''

Kokona receives a phone call from an unknown person at 7:40AM where she says, "Hello? Ugh- I told you not to call me when I'm at school! Like I said, that was a one-time thing! I don't wanna do that again! ...H...How much did you say...?...Well...if it's just...one more time...then I guess it's okay...How about tonight? Where we met last time? In Sisuta Town? Okay then...see you tonight."

Obviously, she is being paid for sex, AND NOT being domestically abused by her father. He goes to her room and cries about the huge debt to a loan shark that he is struggling to pay. The loan shark keeps raising the interest, and is threatening violence if he doesn't get paid back pronto. Kokona is trying to help her father pay off their debt, even though she hates doing gross things for money.

  • Considering the game's setting, and as noted above, it's probably Compensated Dating. Enjo Kosai (the Japanese term for it) doesn't always involve sex, but it can, and the general assumption is that it does. In the "Driving Your Rivals to Murder" video, Kokona states that she only goes to dinner with the men she dates and that it doesn't go any further than that.

Kokona won't be a rival at all in the final version
Come on... she's suffered enough.
  • Confirmed by the one-two punch of the Rival Introduction Video (in which Kokona does not appear) and by the Matchmaking update video. Dev said at the end of the latter that the final two elimination methods – Sabotage and "Unique" – necessitated adding Osana to the game, meaning Kokona would finally get the time away from being his guinea pig that she most certainly deserves.
    • However, he has also teased the idea of there being a first-day "tutorial" so players can familiarize themselves with controls and mechanics. It would involve helping out a member of the Drama Club reharsing a play about a serial killer, who would be... you guessed it: Kokona.

The murderous girl from the tapes is Yandere-chan's mother. The reason why she and her husband are out of town is because she knows that the journalist spotted her.
We know that the girl would now be a woman, that she's a Yandere, she's also a Manipulative Bitch, and that she may still be up to her old antics. The journalist left the country out of fear of what she could do to him again. It's possible that she convinced her husband to take her out on a "second honeymoon", which just so happens to be where the journalist is.
  • Confirmed by Basement Tape 10.
    • However, Ryoba never even attempted to give her husband a reason as to why she wanted to leave the country; she literally just said "Pack your bags darling; we're going to America!" and dragged him out of the house, while saying the duration of their sojourn "depends on how fast I can track [the Journalist] down."

Your Mother is actually trying to kill the Journalist.
Makes the most logical sense. Both parents are confirmed to have left the country. The Journalist left the country because he was afraid of the Mom. He investigated a murder in the 80s. Your mother killed a young woman in the 80s.
  • Confirmed by the tenth basement tape. Ryoba knows that the Journalist fled to the United States after she realized that he was following her around and is trying to track him down to kill him, dragging her husband Jokichi along with her.

If Yandere-chan murders too many students, the player will get a bad ending.
Whether it's from Senpai transferring away from the school in fear of his life, or the police eventually tying the murders to Yandere-chan.
  • Confirmed. YandereDev is going to have a special ending for killing everyone within one day.
    • However, it's not clear what this ending – or any endings – will be like. It may not be a Bad End.
    • YandereDev has stated that killing an entire class's worth of students in a single day will result in the Headmaster of Akademi High ordering a school shutdown, which will be a Game Over (though probably also an achievement).
      • It's finally been implemented. Killing fifty students or more causes the Headmaster to shut down the school. Senpai starts attending another school to which she can't follow him to.

There will be magic in the game.
Well, we have ghosts, so why not magic?
  • Confirmed. Blood sacrifices in the Occult Club let you commune with demons and make deals with them.

The fire extinguisher is related to a future rival elimination method.
It's not just to make the school look more, well, like a school, but it will be related to bludgeoning a student to death or setting them on fire.
  • Most likely bludgeoning, as a student running around on fire and screaming at school would be VERY noticeable.
    • Confirmed! They weren't originally meant to be weapons in the game, but YandereDev liked the model the volunteer made as a "screening task" and decided to put them in. In the future, they will be available as bludgeons. There will a future elimination method where you can set people on fire, but it's unclear if the extinguishers are going to be involved.
      • The Kill It with Fire elimination is in, but no fire extinguishers are involved. That said, you can now kill someone by hitting them with the fire extinguishers.

Senpai's little sister does not actually love him that way.
Maybe Yandere-chan is just being a bit paranoid and thinks that the Imouto will get in the way.
  • Confirmed. Imouto-chan (actual name Hanako Yamada) is a Clingy Jealous Girl with separation issues. Her "confession", such as it is, involves her making Senpai promise he won't accept any love confession for the foreseeable future.
    • For what it's worth, an earlier draft of Hanako had her as much more jailbaity and pervy.

The Student Council President has some connection to Saikou Corp.
The Rival Introduction Video revealed that her name would be Megami Saiko. Maybe she's the heiress to the company.

Info-chan is the president of the Info Club.
Which is the reason YanDev was so secretive about what it's about, and why the curtains are drawn in that room.
  • Info-chan is the only member of the Info Club, so confirmed.

Yandere-chan will most likely go on a killing spree if the "SNAP" option is selected.
She will suffer a huge mental breakdown and kill everyone she sees, including Senpai. She may even commit suicide, since she can't live with a rejection from Senpai.
  • As of March 31, 2020, SNAP has been implemented. While she doesn't have to kill everyone she sees, anyone she gets close to is subjected to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, ending up dead afterwards, except for Senpai, whom you are required to find a knife first before killing, followed by yourself. So confirmed.

Theories Right for the Wrong Reasons

The game will stop after several weeks.
Just like the WMG guess about the game being endless, there will be a ton of suitors that will replace Osana each week. Eventually, the game will stop after several weeks because Yandere-chan is tired of this and just gives up or asks Senpai out without a care.
  • The main game is planned to be a ten-week campaign. Yan-chan will ask Senpai out at that point because there are no rivals left. So… this WMG's topline is correct, but the reasoning behind it is not.

Pippi is also a loner.
A nerdy one at that. She never seems to hang out with other people unless you start killing a bunch of people, and then the remaining girls start confessing to Pippi that they have problems. Yes, this can happen, as seen in Azzman's playthrough of the game.
  • The Azzman part is debunked; he is known to heavily mod the game to make his videos more interesting.
    • Rule of thumb – if your primary source about a game mechanic is an AzzMan video, it's probably modded unless he specifically says he's playing the game "vanilla" (which he sometimes does whenever a major new build is released).
  • For what it's worth, Pippi actually does have the "Loner" persona, as shown if you take a photo of her face and send it to Info-chan.
    • Her persona has been changed to "Phone Addict".

The rivals will become increasingly more difficult to deal with.
There could be different gimmicks to each of the rivals which add complications to Yandere-chan getting rid of them:
  • The drama club girl might be more social than the previous rivals, and spend most of her time with her friends. This would make it harder to isolate her for a murder. Meanwhile, the occult girl is less social, but has a paranoid personality even when the atmosphere is light, making it hard to sneak up on her. Maybe she's able to communicate with the phantom, and got tipped off to something being wrong with Yandere-chan.

The athletic girl is physically stronger than the previous rivals, and is able to overpower Yandere-chan in an direct assault like the teachers. The teacher rivals would work similarly.

The little sister isn't super-strong, but is difficult to kill because she spends all her time with Senpai. And you don't want him to notice you getting your killing on.

The class president might also have super-strength, and is also a detective who noticed that everyone around Senpai is disappearing (at least, in the non-pacifist route), and is getting closer to him to catch the culprit. At this point, a new mechanic might pop up: the rival has planted evidence implicating Yandere-chan in the event that she disappears, and you need to get rid of it before the police arrive or it's game over. Additionally, the class president might employ a bodyguard that follows her around and is nearly invincible.

  • The topline is Confirmed by Word of God, but the bullet points are not.

    • Osana's complication is that she's friends with the former Martial Arts Club president, who follows her everywhere and acts as her bodyguard.
    • Amai spends every day hosting a bake sale in the courtyard, surrounded by people.
    • The guess regarding Hanako is Confirmed; she is physically weak, but very clingy towards Senpai and spends most of her time around him.
    • Megami has extensive self-defense training, the authority to install obstacles like metal detectors and security cameras, is incredibly popular, and knows to watch out for Ayano.

She is the Journalist's daughter and started goading Yandere-chan to obtain enough incriminating evidence to put our Villain Protagonist in jail. As time goes by, however, she begins to become Yandere for Yandere-chan. Regardless of your methods, she falls for your brutality, creativity, or deviousness (or possibly all three). The final mission is an inversion; Yandere-chan must find and defeat Info-chan before she kills Senpai so that she can have Yandere-chan for herself. Given that the final boss has a non-lethal resolution, One True Threesome might just be the ticket to everyone walking out of it with their (physical) health. Yandere-mama is suitably delighted to welcome new "talent" into the Aishi family...
  • Interesting, but sadly, probably jossed. Word of God says no students with crushes on Yan-chan are planned, let alone any yandere for her. Unless YandereDev has changed his mind again, of course.
  • The topline, however, could still be true. If you text Info-chan photos of your murders, she'll congratulate you on a job well done, though she also admits she has no use for such things.

The Mission Mode alternate universe was created by Senpai meeting the same fate as FUN Girl.
It's one way of explaining why he isn't around in Mission Mode, and why Yan-chan is a Professional Killer instead of a Yandere.
  • Interesting theory. However, the very first iteration of Mission Mode still had Senpai in it. He was removed because it made no sense to have him (plus his aura and ability to cause insta-Game Over made the mode annoying to play).
    • The Mission Mode alternate universe did have something unfortunate happen to Senpai, but he wasn't Ret-Gone'd. He was simply killed by Ayano.
