He recognized the attacks as a werewolf loose in London. Maybe he was friend of Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. Edward Muller or Jeffrey Garth all being men with great knowledge about supernatural things and (Garth at least) psychiatry, he received valious information to kill the werewolf.As part of the Universal Horror universe, this is not so crazy to imagine.
