The alien spheres don't actually create black holes.

Instead they open temporal wormholes to the proximity of the Sun - close enough for its gravity to suck up objects on the other side but far enough to not incinerate the whole place. The fact that the device shines instead of creating pitch-black ball of void supports this theory.
