WMG / Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution

Go To

Meltan will be in the movie.
To promote the next generation of Pokemon games, as with other "sneak peek" mons. It'll also likely have some kind of relationship with this continuity's Mewtwo.
  • What about Melmetal?
  • Jossed. No monsters outside Kanto, besides those who appeared in the original and some Wingull in the credits, appear.

Mewtwo's original voice actors will return.
As a call back to the original movie Mewtwo will get his originals voice actors.
  • Confirmed in Japanese; technically jossed in English because Dan Green returns instead.

Ho-oh and Lugia will make a silhouetted cameo.
As Mewtwo is intended to be created as the strongest Pokémon, how powerful it's intended to be will be illustrated by the Tower Duo.
  • Jossed.

Cross will return.
He will be one of the trainers invited to Mewtwo's island.
  • Jossed.

Cast members from both 'I Choose You' and 'Power of Us' will appear
As to unify the two films a bit more.
  • Jossed.

There will be no returning characters but Ash and Ash's Pokemon
Per how Pokémon: The Power of Us did things.
  • Jossed. Brock and Misty return.

The English title might be different
Something like "Mewtwo Strikes Out" or "Mewtwo Strikes Again" would work.
  • Or maybe "Mewtwo Evalutes Back"
    • Jossed. The dub keeps the original title.

The Film will have a completely different ending.
In the original Mewtwo Strikes Back, the titular Pokemon used his psychic powers to erase the memories of Ash and Co., and undid the events of the movie. The new film will instead have Mewtwo allowing the protagonists keep their memories, and will decide to travel the world to fully understand his purpose.
  • So does that mean Mewtwo Returns won't happen?
    • Jossed. The Stinger shows Mewtwo and the clones taking refuge in the setting of ''Mewtwo Returns."

Whilst the same core themes are the same, the movie's plot would be widely explored
This is written long before the January 1st 2019 trailer.

The Original movie, most of the movie took place in fixed set pieces. this movie however will take place in a wider range of locales. to fit with this narrative, there will be 2 Mewtwos cloned. to fit with the Astroboy origin story of Ambertwo, Dr Fuji (As Dr Tenma) would have to be recruited. expanding on this, there would be 2 scientists, filling in the roles of Hamegg and Dr Elefun (Ochanomizu). Team Rocket will have already obtained some of Mew's DNA which they used to fabricate a clone, which unfortunately formed into a Mewtwo, exceeding Giovanni's expectations of power, it suffered from bouts of psychotic rage (not unlike that of Broly which not even mind-numbing drugs were enough to stern it's impulses. which forced them to store it under cryogenic suspension.

Dr Fuji is then recruited into the team, with him hoping to utilize the research into saving his daughter, though he was working away from his family for years, missing out on their lives; eventually his daughter succumbed to disease and died of natural causes. angered, he worked even harder, ignoring his wife in the process. now that he lost everything, the only thing that'll bring back happiness is to bring back Amber from the dead. eventually he succeeded. around this time, a second attempt at cloning a Mew occurred, again, this one became a Mewtwo, however proximity to Amber in an embryonic state gave him the spark of humanity, taming his potential insanity and made him wonder about the bleak state of the world.

After years, Dr Fuji discovered that the cloned Amber would never be his Amber, distraught, he drops out of the project. with the Hamegg-analogue taking up reins of the project. Giovanni was far too focused on Mewtwo to even care about the cloned Amber, so Hamegg dumps her vat out and kidnaps her, as no one would question about a clone that likely died. due to Ambertwo's connection to Mewtwo (maybe Aura?), this causes Mewtwo to escape to look for her.

After news reports of a mysterious pokemon, the higher ups in Team Rocket alerted Giovanni, which he dusted off the previously-cryogenically frozen Mewtwo, fitted it with mind-augmenting cybernetics (From the Aether Foundation? as a callback to Type: Null) to seek out the 2nd Mewtwo and bring him back dead or alive. at some point in the movie, Ambertwo bumps into Ash, which starts off a chain reaction of events that causes the 1st Mewtwo to confuse Ambertwo for the 2nd Mewtwo due to energy signatures, simply going smorgasbording due to overriding its restraints. eventually the 2nd Mewtwo is pitted against the 1st Mewtwo, maybe both will go Mega? with the 1st Mewtwo being a more evil-looking Y, with the 2nd one Mega Evolving into X.

All they would have to figure out is how to tie Mew into the plot, and if the 1st Mewtwo can be redeemed or not.

The movie will not be in CGI. It's just a case of Never Trust a Trailer
  • Jossed. This is the first All-CGI movie in the franchise.

This will be the start of a major Continuity Reboot
See the CGI in the teaser? That's proof!
  • Then what if Ash disappears?
  • Jossed.

The English dub will be completely redone from scratch, instead of using any audio from the original version.
Due to Warner Bros. still having some rights to the first movie. It might also affect the music in the end credits, since The Pokemon Company is unlikely to pony up a lot of cash for "We're a Miracle" and the other tracks.
  • The Pokemon Company might've fully brought the complete rights to the first three movies, so it means the song rights may be in their own comfort.
    • Confirmed. Apart from Giovanni and Mewtwo, the dub uses TPCi's cast for the main characters.
    • Meanwhile with music, while a new remix of the original “Pokémon Theme” is used, the main score, “Brother My Brother” and all the credits songs were replaced.

The English dub will be more faithful
Related to the above, Pokémon Company International is usually more faithful than 4Kids. The Japanese script might be more closely followed compared to the first one.
  • Confirmed.

Mega-evolution will be present.
Mewtwo will Mega-evolve into Mega Mewtwo X, and each trainer has one of their Pokémon capable of Mega-evolution (Fergus' Gyrados, Corey's Venusaur and Neesha's Blastoise). For Ash's case, his Charizard will be re-written to be more obedient and form such a bond to be capable of Mega-evolving.
  • Jossed, though Ash's Charizard is indeed less impulsive than in the original movie (which reflected the show's characterization at the time). Otherwise, Mega Evolution is not even mentioned.

An English dub may not happen
Re-using the voices of the 4Kids dub cast without permission may be against their wishes.
  • Jossed. They got around that by using the TPCi voices.

In the opening scene, Donphan will be replaced with an unknown Generation 8 Pokémon.
The original version of the scene had no dialogue, only music. If the movie is Shot-For-Shot, yet the Pokémon Company wants to promote Pokémon Sword and Shield, that scene would be the perfect spot to place the early bird cameo without significant rewrites.
  • Jossed, though Raymond's Golem is swapped out with a Drowzee to correct a type-balance error in the original movie when it's KO'd by Ash's Pikachu with an Electric-type move.
