The Synth technology is at least partially based on extra terrestrial technology

All other technology seems to be equal to modern-day tech outside of synths even though creating a perfect robotic replica of a human being should entail all sort of secondary inventions. It might be that the human creators of the Synth merely reverse engineered some existing AI/android tech. Perhaps the synth-tech was given out as an experiment, to see what humans would do with quasi-sentient machines that perfectly resemble humans, perhaps as some kind of empathy test.

Sophie is a synth

Or at least, becomes one in between Episode 1 and 2. After everyone has accepted Anita's presence in the home and everyone is asleep, we see Anita carrying a sleeping Sophie out of the house. After this, the episode ends. The next episode has Laura comment on Sophie having muddy pyjamas, to which Sophie offers no rational explanation. While the nature of this event is ambiguous, it is highly likely that something happened to Sophie during this time that aids the synths. If she was recreated as a synth, she would be able to spy on the family and report to the synths without raising suspicion, considering Anita's is much more suspicious. This would also explain Sophie's Heel-Face turn towards Anita from being merely a synth to a member of their family. Also, we have never seen Sophie get injured and we have seen very little of her in the story when she is by herself. This would give her a lot of chances allowing her to communicate with other synths and share information to them without raising suspicion.
- Confirmed, sort of. She begins taking on very Synth-like mannerisms. She is still human, of course. But having emotional issues that manifest as Synth-like behaviour.

The Humans universe is on the other side of The Reality Zone

That's why the fembots become sentient when they cross the line they get in the range of the code Nyska sent out.
