Second Extinction is a semi-open world Co-Op Multiplayer FPS game published by Systemic Reaction (of Generation Zero fame). Set in a post-apocalyptic world where mutated dinosaurs have taken over the planet, humanity is on the brink of extinction.

You're among a squadron of soldiers sent on assignments to take out the mutated dinosaurs and reclaim Earth for humanity. Players can select from a variety of characters, each with unique abilities and weapons, as well as going through various campaigns including wiping out dinosaur hives, collecting dinosaur eggs for research, rescuing stranded humans, collecting and salvaging supplies from ruins of human outposts and of course fighting gigantic Alpha-class dinosaurs in lengthy boss battles.

An Early Access release is available for Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. An updated, full release was announced for late 2022, then pushed to early 2023, then delayed indefinitely with no official announcement. On October 16th, 2023, Systemic Reaction officially announced that they were discontinuing development of Second Extinctionnote , with the game to be removed from sale on all digital storefronts, and the servers shut down sometime in 2024.

Time to make the Dinosaurs Extinct... this time for Good!

  • Abandoned Mine: One of the stages, and it's abandoned nature makes it a perfect breeding ground for a new dinosaur colony. You'll need to guide a minecart loaded with C4 to it's heart to wipe out all the dinos.
  • After the End: The game is set after colonies of mutant dinosaurs, supposedly long-extinct, awakens from hibernation and starts repopulating and taking over the surface. Several levels have you coming across empty human outposts and settlements overrun by the hostile dinos.
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: The ceratops and ankylosaurs, traditionally herbovorous dinos, now feeds on flesh. Justified because they're mutated versions.
  • Attackits Weak Point: Flatbacks and Bulls have a glowing weak point on their belly, however you need to knock them over to expose it, which usually involves dodging their full-body tackle attack for the Flatback or knocking them over with explosives. The T-Rex has a similar weak point on its throat, though it's very hard to hit unless you're right under it (where you'll quickly be killed) or the T-Rex is roaring.
  • Gatling Good: You can collect a minigun for shredding dinosaur enemies apart.
  • Giant Mook: Ankylosaurs (known as Flatbacks), Styracosaurs (known as Bulls), and Apatosauruses (not yet implemented) are among the larger-than-average regular dinosaurs you'll be shooting at in several levels.
  • Grenade Launcher: One of the many weapons you can use, which fires an exploding energy projectile doing heavy damage on the dinos.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Armored raptors are covered in plates of rock-like armor, which need to be shot off before they can be damaged. Flatbacks and Bulls also have tougher armored variants.
  • Invisible Monsters: One of the dilophosaurus sub-species enemies appears to have Hollywood Chameleon DNA integrated into their bodies during the mutation, where it can randomly turn invisible while pursuing you.
  • Kill All Humans: Owing to the mutation reverting dinosaurs to their natural, feral instincts, all the dinos (including stereotypically-docile herbivores like the ceratopses and styracosaurs) will maul humans to pieces by default.
  • Kill Sat: The Orbital Shot, which drops a powerful energy beam from the stratosphere on the dinosaurs. It's especially useful on large dinosaur groups gathered together, though you'll need to pinpoint where it lands.
  • Marathon Boss: The mutant T-Rex, who only have a handful of attacks (consisting of biting and trampling at you) but tanks your grenades, bullets and everything you throw at it like no tomorrow.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Dinosaurs are already pretty impressive, so how about mutated dinosaurs who can spit acid, discharge electricity and grow organic spikes all over their body to impale you?
  • Prehistoric Monster: The games' dinosaurs, all of them which are depicted as hostile and violently responds to human presence by default. None of them are friendly, that's for sure.
  • Raptor Attack: Velociraptors are among the more common saurian enemies you'll encounter.
  • Satchel Charge: Timed explosive bundles in pouches are one of the equipment you can use (it's even called Satchel Charge in-game) for blowing up dinosaurs. Best saved for larger enemies like styracosaurs and ankylosaurs.
  • Shock and Awe: Certain raptor enemies have started developing glands allowing them to generate electricity, where they'll shoot energy bolts on you as an attack or release a devastating electrical sphere covering a wide radius. Goes without saying that these are among the toughest opponents you'll face.
  • Shooting Gallery: Before you set off to shoot dinosaurs, you practice in a training stage where you shoot cardboard dinosaurs on moving panels. With little crosses spray-painted over their eyes for good measure.
  • Sniper Rifle: One that the game calls Scout Rifle, but otherwise functions like a sniper. Which grants it's user a scope to zoom in on dinosaurs a long distance away and blast it at long range.
  • Super Spit: Dilophosauruses and certain raptors can launch their poisonous saliva at you as a ranged attack, in a manner similar to Jurassic Park. The Artistic License – Paleontology could be justified this time however, because you're fighting mutated dinosaurs.
  • Tail Slap: Most of the dinosaurs does this, and their tails have a far wider range than their bite. In the case of the ankylosaurs and certain mutated raptors with spikes growing out their tails, it's Beware My Stinger Tail instead.
  • Temper-Ceratops: Mutant ceratopses will attack you on sight, and attempt to rough you up with their horns.
  • Terrifying Tyrannosaur: A hostile mutant T-Rex serves as the strongest and most durable boss in the game, and a Super-Persistent Predator as well who keeps coming after you after absorbing north of 200 Gatling Gun rounds. Said T-Rex takes forever to finally put down, however killing it is optional.
  • Tough Armored Dinosaur: Mutated ankylosaurs, who serves as Heavily Armored Mook enemies capable of tanking plenty of hits before going down. Beware their Rolling Attack!
  • Video Game Dashing: You can dodge sideways several feet by pressing the jump button while strafing sideways or backwards. This move doesn't use stamina and is essential for the game's combat, since dinosaurs can easily outpace you if you simply try to sprint away from them, and sprinting cancels your reload while dodging doesn't. Assault-class characters also have a special move in which they dash forward a moderate distance; this does have a cooldown and seems to be to quickly attack with a shotgun or similar close-range weapon.
