Ratatan (ラタタン) is an upcoming "Command Carnival"-style Rhythm Game/Real-Time Strategy hybrid by Ratata Arts, Tokyo Virtual Theory, and pH Studio, as a Creator-Driven Successor to Patapon, created by several returning Patapon developers, including series designer Hiroyuki Kotani and composer Kemmei Adachi. The scheduled release date is in April 2025 for Steam and consoles.

A goddess has decided to share magical Medama to the desolate desert planet of Redo. Now she has to lead the tribe of Cobuns to spread the joy to the world, while various monsters and bandits stand in the way.

Has a Kickstarter campaign here.

Gameplay trailer, Kickstarter video.

Ratatan features:

  • Action Commands: As can be assumed from the trailer, the he game follows the command-action system. By giving "< Tat", "< Pat", "Zun >", "Taka >", "Tan >", "Yah ^", "Hoi ^" in specific order, the player prompts the army to perform actions like attack or move.
  • Ambidextrous Sprite: As seen in the trailer, the decorations of hero units don't respect the side and inexplicably flip depending on the direction.
  • Art Evolution: Compared to its predecessor (which had a silhouetted artstyle), the art direction is much more colorful featuring detailed artwork for both background scenery and units.
  • Captain Ersatz: The dragon boss Dekadon seen in the trailer is a clear stand-in for Dodonga, possessing almost exact recreations of Dodonga's attacks. His Kickstarter description even comments he was made by another god and feels not in the right placenote .
  • Color-Coded Armies: As seen in the trailer, the player units have the white color theme while the enemy units are Red and Black and Evil All Over.
  • Combos: As seen in the trailer, getting enough good commands in a row will achieve Fever and even Super Fever.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Most allied characters have only one eye; the humanoid hero units included. All of them are shown wearing eyepatches, bandages, or some other object that obscures only one of their eyes.
  • Face of a Thug: Based on the Kickstarter description, Harigittan's unapproachable appearance scares potential friends away.
  • Hero Unit: As seen in the trailer, alongside regular Cobuns the player can take a few special members that have unique designs and abilities.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As seen in the trailer, each hero unit follows an animal motif. Nyandora is the cat hero who uses Wolverine Claws and runs on all fours. There are also Harigittan the hedgehog, Keroronpa the frog, Mimizukyun the owl.
  • Musical Assassin: All hero units seen so far in the trailer use musical instruments called Meloduims as weapons.
  • Narcissist: Based on the Kickstarter description, Keroronpa loves the sound of their own voice.
  • Outlaw: The Kickstarter advertises The Stinger Diggers as the main villainous faction of Yeehawler Mountain. Led by Scorpswoosh Bill, a tall scorpion creature, they plunder the countryside whilst riding on their Wagoon.
  • Oculothorax: As seen in the trailer, regular player and enemy units have one eye.
  • Pirate: The Kickstarter shows The Swashbuckling Mantaneers as one of the factions. Led by Captain Barbatoid (a ray with cavalier boots, a longcoat, and a bicorne hat), they sail the Paraddean Seas on their Jolly Hermit, a hermit crab residing in a pirate ship flying a black skull flag.
  • Sentient Vehicle: Fortrun, the flying ship, has an expressive face and as seen in the trailer joins in battles.
  • Support Party Member: Based on the Kickstarter description, Keroronpa mainly buffs allies and enrages enemies.
