Go for the Gold! note

A 1995 licensed Platform Game released for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Based on the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. It was developed by Alexandria and U.S Gold. A Sega 32X version was planned, but was cancelled.

You are Izzy, the mascot of the '96 Atlanta games and your mission is to light the eternal Olympic Flame, which has gone out. Without the flame, the 1996 games will be cancelled. Izzy has to find the five magical Olympic rings to open the reality vortex, which will take him to the real world to light the flame. It'll be a tough quest, but Izzy has some tricks of his own, like his unique transformation ability, which lets him take many different forms.

The gameplay is pretty simplistic and standard platforming fare. Izzy runs and jumps through various stages collecting gold medals and fighting enemies. On occasion, he will have to overcome a challenge to win one of the Olympic rings.

This game contains examples of:

  • Expressive Health Bar: Izzy's "eyes" in the HUD, which turn dizzy when he gets hit.
  • Goomba Stomp: Zigzagged. Izzy has two different jumps. The standard jump and a spin jump. In order to hurt enemies only the Spin jump works. The standard Jump only results in Izzy getting hurt if he lands on an enemy.
  • Green Hill Zone: The Greek Village is the first stop on Izzy's quest.
  • Hit Points: When Izzy takes a hit, he becomes "dizzy" which is a "danger" state where he loses a life if he gets hit again. Collecting three medals restores Izzy back to normal.
  • It's a Wonderful Failure: Lose a life and you're treated to a dramatic scene of Izzy spinning out and collapsing underneath a spotlight.
  • Lethal Lava Land: The Lava Dome is an underground magma cave.
  • Mooks, but no Bosses: There is no villain in this game, but there are many enemies standing in Izzy's way who try to stop him from gathering the Olympic rings.
  • Score Screen: The player is graded on how well they do in levels, with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals given based on performances.
  • Shapeshifting: Some power ups can turn Izzy into different shapes, like a rocket that shoots him upward, or a kite that lets him fly.
  • Space Zone: The Space Walk stages take place in well... outer space. Izzy's physics aren't really changed much and he jumps like normal.
