Final Nights 3: Nightmares Awaken is the third game in the Final Nights series. It is a Prequel set before the first two games that follows Kevin who is accidentally badly injured by an animatronic and is rushed to the hospital. During the stay, several reaper animatronics try to claim his soul and Kevin must survive all five nights before it is too late.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: William Afton dismisses Kevin's legitimate fear of the animatronics as a result of him being a coward.
  • Adaptation Name Change: William Afton's daughter is named Karen, instead of Elizabeth as in Five Nights at Freddy's. Justified since the game predates Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, where she is officially named.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: The Rules of Chica's Party World (keep in mind that this is a children's restaurant):
    • 1. Do not touch Chica.
    • 2. Do not run around Chica.
    • 3. Do not crawl behind the arcades.
    • 4. Do not steal the balloons.
    • 5. Do not take the elevator alone.
    • 6. Do not crap your hands.
  • The Cameo: 8-BitRyan and Razzbowski provide the voice acting for the two men discussing Chica's Party World in the Night 4 cutscene.
  • Downer Ending: No matter what ending you get, it will leave a bad taste in your mouth. The most positive ending has Kevin encouraged by Martha to go with her and his sister to take revenge against those who wronged them together.
  • Giggling Villain:
    • Reaper Fredbear has Golden Freddy's laugh from FNaF, but slowed down. It's not as deep as normal Freddy's laugh, since you can faintly hear the child's voice in it.
    • Shadow Bonnie has an absolutely evil-sounding giggle if he appears in the Closet. It's also very deep.
  • Hospital Gurney Scene: The game opens with this.
  • Kid Hero: Your character is the Child from Five Nights at Freddy's 4. His name, if the Night 1 cutscene is to be believed, is Kevin Afton.
  • Knight Templar Parent: While her husband is the polar opposite, Martha Afton is this. She persuades both her children to take revenge against those who caused their suffering, turning them into monstrosities that is Shadow Bonnie and the Brother.
  • Madness Mantra: Fredbear's Night 5 tips: JOIN US JOIN US JOIN US JOIN US.
  • Missing Mom: Martha Afton is heard having an argument with her husband in the Night 1 minigame, but she is mysteriously absent for the rest of the game. The ending reveals that she is the spirit possessing the Fredbear plush, with the implication that William offed her when she refused to participate with the animatronic business again.
  • Mythology Gag: The Museum description for Shadow Bonnie notes that Karen still writes her name as "rwqfsfaxc", which is the name Shadow Bonnie is registered as in Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
  • The Night That Never Ends: The night literally will never end if you do not sleep, since it is the only way to pass time. This becomes problematic in later nights, especially in Night 5 where the animatronics stop pestering you for maybe a few seconds. If you are slow, you might never complete the night.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: Despite looking to be a take on the events of Five Nights at Freddy's 4, the final scene hints that everything that happened was real. Final Nights 4 eventually confirms that it was.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different:
    • Shadow Bonnie personifies the spirit of Karen Afton after she escaped from Circus Baby.
    • As revealed in the next installment, the Reapers are ghosts sent by Puppet Master to force Kevin to free his mother's spirit from the Fredbear plush.
  • Prequel: This is the only game that fits this all the way, since it is entirely set before Final Nights.
  • Sickly Green Glow: Lampshaded by two patrons of Chica's Party World in the Night 4 cutscene, who comment that it is rather unappealing for a children's restaurant to prominently feature green colors in its design.
  • Start of Darkness: It's subtly implied that William Afton's psychopathic tendencies only began in full force when he designed Spring Bonnie, which turned to be a precedent for him to create more animatronics, thus erasing the time he could spend with his family and making him more and more isolated. In the Night 1 cutscene, Martha reminds him that the family was happy and well-off when there was only Fredbear, whom she states is the only animatronic who endears her.
  • Tomato Surprise: The character you play as in the in-between night cutscenes is not Kevin, but his sister, Karen Afton.
