Avil the Giant Slayer

As children, we were told our world once had heroes.
Fairy tales to inspire hope, in a world with none.
As far back as anyone could remember, mankind had been at war with itself...

Extinction is a 2018 Hack and Slash-style action game developed by Iron Galaxy Studios and published by Modus Games for the PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

In a steampunk-fantasy universe (not unlike Attack on Titan), humanity is under attack by a race of kaiju-sized, orc-like monstrosities called the Ravenii, emerging from a series of portal one day to devour everything in sight.

Avil, a hunter and sentinel and the Player Character, is humanity's last hope. Armed with his trusty grappling launcher and swords, he will face a never-ending horde of monsters, taking down the towering Ravenii while battling their hordes and hordes of offspring, the Jackals in several stages.

The game later received a series of Expansion PacksJackal Invasion, Ravenii Rampage and Skybound Sentinel.

Not to be confused with Extinction (2018), a film that was coincidentally released the same year.

Our suffering is at an end. Our Extinction... averted!

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Avil's blade can shatter steel and decapitate giants in a single swing.
  • Airborne Mooks: There are winged Jackal enemies that will repeatedly swoop from the air to attack either Avil or the civilians. They tend to repeatedly get into Avil's way when he's climbing on a Ravenii.
  • Air-Dashing: Avil can pull this off while swinging in mid-air, a skill that comes in very handy when reaching for the Ravenii's weak spots and trying not to be swatted out the air.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Implied with the Ravenii and their offspring, the Jackals. They exist to devour everything in sight, destroy cities and stomp on humans for no reason other than satisfying their thirst for blood. By the game's ending, we still don't even know what their beef against humans is.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: The Ravenii and their offsprings, the Jackals, comes in a myriad of colours - red green, blue, purple... justified since they're, well, monsters not from our world.
  • An Arm and a Leg: As Avil, you spend around 60% of the game hacking off limbs and appendages from various Ravenii to put a stop to their rampages. Followed by their heads.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: The Ravenii can be damaged only when targeting joints of their appendages e.g. under their kneecaps or elbows. And when landing a killing blow, they're vulnerable on their napes.
  • Bullet Time: The camera tends to slow down whenever Avil lands a fatal, killing blow on the Ravenii, with the monster keeling over in slow-motion as a geyser of blood ejects from the stump where its head used to be, followed by the monster's gigantic carcass splatting to the ground.
  • Camera Abuse: From Ravenii blood hitting the lens to the screen cracking whenever Avil gets crushed by monsters.
  • Colossus Climb: Avil will need to climb on the legs and backs of the gigantic Ravenii in order to reach and sever their appendages, just like Shadow of the Colossus. It's actually one of the game's main selling points.
  • David Versus Goliath: The human-sized hero, Avil, against monstrous Ravenii larger than buildings, with Avil winning every time.
  • Decapitation Required: To eliminate a Ravenii for good, you need to cut off its head. Remove limbs or other appendages and it will re-grow the severed parts in a few seconds.
  • Dual Boss: As the game progresses, later stages will throw two – or even three – Ravenii all at once for Avil to battle.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: The Ravenii will repeatedly attempt to stomp Avil underfoot if he happens to be touching the ground, until he starts swinging around with his grappling hook.
  • Gigantic Adults, Tiny Babies: The human-sized Jackal enemies are juvenile offsprings of the skyscraper-sized Ravenii, where a Jackal is barely the size of the adult Ravenii's toes.
  • Gotta Rescue Them All: Besides battling Ravenii and Jackals, several stages have civilians that Avil needs to liberate and escort out the city, and getting too many innocents killed leads to failing the level.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Avil uses a grappling hook, not unlike the weapons used in Attack on Titan, for swinging around buildings and grabbing on to monsters to reach their heads.
  • Healing Factor: Ravenii can be subdued by severing their limbs and legs, but if left idle they'll regenerate parts after a while.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Armored Ravenii appear as early as the second level, with the extra armor they wear on their elbows, knees and necks needing to be destroyed before they can be vulnerable to attacks.
  • Hobbling the Giant: The Ravenii's rampage can be stopped by aiming for their legs and severing them underneath the knees.
  • Kaiju: The Ravenii are orc-like monstrosities the size of buildings that Avil spends the whole game battling.
  • Mutual Kill: If a slain Ravenii falls on Avil, it kills him. This tends to happen if he happens to land in front of a monster he killed.
  • Off with His Head!: All Ravenii must be finished off by decapitating them.
  • One Riot, One Ranger: You might notice Avil's the only character who's actively putting a stand against the Ravenii horde. This is because he's one of the last Sentinels, humans trained to combat the Ravenii.
  • To Serve Man: The Ravenii and their offsprings, the Jackals, feast on humans, with several instances where bystanders and civilians Avil's unable to save get devoured onscreen.
  • Vulnerable Civilians: Bystanders can be killed, either by the Ravenii or Jackals. Losing too many civilians will lead to a Non-Standard Game Over.
  • Weapon of X-Slaying: Avil's swords can be empowered by magic runes, which allows him to slay the Ravenii with ease.
