Agent Red reporting for duty!

Codename: Eagle is a 1999 First-Person Shooter developed by Refraction Games and published by Take-Two Interactive.

In an Alternate History version of 1917, where World War I and the October Revolution never occurred, Russia is the world's leading superpower until Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was betrayed and murdered by his leading commander and supposedly one of his trusted friends, Genral Popov, who subsequently ordered the royal family massacred.

However, the royal family bloodline isn't entirely exterminated. Thanks to the Tsar's close ally, Colonel Sergei, the prince, Alexander (who was "shot and left for dead, somehow managing to survive") escaped death and returns ten years later as "Agent Red" of Shadow Command, a La Résistance unit opposing Popov.

The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes. In the single-player campaign, players undertake various missions, including sabotage, reconnaissance, and rescue operations. Multiplayer mode allows players to compete against each other in various game modes, including deathmatch and capture the flag.

Despite the mixed reception, Codename: Eagle is an influential entry in the first-person shooter genre, establishing foundation for later games that emphasizes in open-world exploration and vehicle-based gameplay (like the Battlefield series, also developed by Refraction Games).

There was a long way to go. Many battles to be fought. And great losses to face. This was a time... for Heroes.

  • Anti-Air:
    • The level "Demolition Man" requires Red to destroy multiple AA-canons to prevent Allied Aircrafts from getting shot down.
    • In the rescue mission, Red gets to commandeer an AA-Gun himself, built in the escape boat he's boarding with Dr. Meier. Just as enemy aircraft catches up to them.
Dr. Meier: Planes! Do something before they sink us!
    • The final mission have Red fending off an airstrike with another AA-turret.
  • Anti-Hero: Agent Red may be the game's protagonist, but he's not the nicest guy in the battlefield.
"I need to get into the Church. Tell me how and I'll give you a quick death."
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: The game's final FMV after completing the last mission, which has the crowning of Tsarina Anastasia as Russia's New Queen after the dictatorship has been overthrown thanks to Red. As nearby, Red awaits his promotion.
  • Back Stab: Red can eliminate enemy guards while disguised using this method. Just equip him with the combat knife, sneak behind an unsuspecting mook and press the attack button.
  • Big Dam Plot: The Volga Dam mission (said dam seems to be based off the Volga Hydroelectric Station in real-life) have Red infiltration an enemy base near said dam, to destroy it to stall Popov's war machines.
  • Car Chase Shoot-Out: Tends to happen in several of the Car Fu-based missions. Notably, the stage near Volga Dam have Red stealing an armored vehicle who's equipped with turrets and doing battle with another enemy vehicle armed with the same weapons, while battling each other in an intense chase.
  • Car Fu: In several levels - once Red managed to capture an enemy tank, armored vehicle or motorcycle, he's free to send it on a rampage running over enemy mooks, blowing up barracks and warehouses and generally kicking all sorts of ass (in a gameplay format borrowed from the tank segment of GoldenEye (1997)).
  • Crate Expectations: Red can collect armour, ammunition, and various supplies by destroying crates, which breaks into multiple wooden planks from a soft thrust of his knife.
  • Deadly Gas: The Necro-Gas, which is used for exterminating rebels. One mission have Red infiltrating a Necro-Gas manufacturing plant to sabotage it's production to prevent loss of more lives.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: More than one of Red's missions (including the first) have him stealing uniforms to blend into enemy territory. In fact one of the first briefing emphasizes that "Stealth is the order of the day".
  • Enemy Chatter: Several times, if left idle enemy soldiers can be heard conversing with each other while Red stealthily observes them from the side. Until he interrupts whatever conversation they're having by gunfire.
Mook #1: I don't understand why we have to stand guard here day after day - nothing ever happens!
Mook #2: You are right - we deserve better duties than this. Got a smoke?
Mook #1: Sure, yes... here you go...
[cue Agent Red shooting both dead moments later]
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The game's protagonist was supposedly Prince Alexander of Russia, but everyone calls him by his moniker, "Red". Same goes for his fellow resistance agents, "Agent Goggles", and "Agent Mortar".
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: One of Red's equippable weapons, which can bring a fiery death to every enemy soldier in his way. Due to graphic limitations, it seems like the flamethrower's snout is angled in a lower position than other firearms - resulting in enemies getting incinerated first in the gonads.
  • Kidnapped Scientist: Dr. Meier, the lawful Allied scientist, was captured by the enemy and forced into working for them to develop their war machines, with one mission requiring Red to extract him.
  • Locomotive Level: "Into the Eagle's Nest" have Red infiltrating a train headed for enemy territory and fighting enemy forces aboard.
  • Old-School Dogfight: A few missions, like "A Train To Catch", in which Red turns out to be an Ace Pilot as well taking down enemy fighter planes in aerial battles.
  • One Riot, One Ranger: While Agent Red is part of a La Résistance unit, don't expect him to receive too much help from his superiors during missions - each and every stage have him working alone to take out entire enemy bases, all by himself.
  • Spreading Disaster Map Graphic: One appears in the opening FMV to depict General Popov's control expanding all over Russia to capturing part of Europe.

You have completed all your missions and the enemy has been defeated! Well done, Red!
