Title Screen for Version 1.9 (Before the game was renamed)

Ever wanted a Super Mario Bros./Sonic the Hedgehog crossover but no Olympics? Enter Boll Deluxe. The answer to the question of what you get if you added Genesis-Era Sonic aesthetics to classic 2D Super Mario action.

The whole project started as a small fan game/hack where an 8-bit styled Sonic could play through the original Super Mario Bros NES game, Boll Deluxe (Originally Sonic Boll) has since grown into something much more. The base game features multiple playable characters (with the recurring ones mainly being Sonic and Mario), each of which can be fully customizable.

It’s not just the visuals that you can change either – Boll Deluxe also allows you to completely change the soundtrack, with new soundtrack options that include The Giana Sisters, Street Fighter and Moonwalker.

The project is currently up to Version 2.0.6.

The game can be downloaded here. The official repository for extra skins, levels, and charms (character mods) can be found here.

This game features the following tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Sonic's Insta-Shield is required to kill not only enemies like Spinies but also Bloopers.
  • Bonus Level: By finding hidden items in certain levels, it is possible to access Special Stages to earn Chaos Emeralds. They are a 3D marble-rolling minigame.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: If you haven't played any of her games outside of the first one, then it's probably not a good idea to play as Giana right after playing as Mario.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Unlike her origin game, Giana plays quite differently than Mario, using abilities from DS and Twisted Dreams.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The older versions used assets from the original NES Super Mario Bros, and the very early versions only had Sonic as a playable character.
  • Guest Fighter: In addition to the Mario and Sonic characters, Giana, The Kid, and Somari are present as playable characters.
  • Level Editor: An in-game editor allows players to build both normal platforming levels and marble bonus levels.
  • Poison Mushroom: Asides from the Trope Namer making an appearance, most regular power-ups become one-hit kills when playing as The Kid, to the point that they'll even launch out of Question Blocks in an attempt to snipe him.
  • Put on a Bus: Stanley and Silver Sonic were removed in 2.0 for unknown reasons, and were replaced by Giana and Fang/Nack. Fang would later be victim to this in version 2.0.5, while Silver Sonic would return to the roster. Stanley would later be added back in the 2.0.6 update as an included character mod.
