The whole project started as a small fan game/hack where an 8-bit styled Sonic could play through the original Super Mario Bros NES game, Boll Deluxe (Originally ''Sonic Boll'') has since grown into something much more. The base game features multiple playable characters (with the recurring ones mainly being Sonic and Mario), each of which can be fully customizable.
It’s not just the visuals that you can change either – Sonic Boll also allows you to completely change the soundtrack, with new soundtrack options that include [[VideoGame/TheGreatGianaSisters The Giana Sisters]], [[Franchise/StreetFighter Street Fighter]] and [[VideoGame/MichaelJacksonsMoonwalker Moonwalker]].
