Trivia / Weiss Schwarz

  • Ascended Fan Nickname: Climax Combos did not have an official name until 2017, despite the concept existing all the way back in Da Capo, which people called it by that name for convenience's sake since the ability was tied to having a Climax card in the Climax Zone. The official naming of Climax Combos also coincided with the change in direction of the game of Weiss as a whole, placing much more emphasis on Climax Combos than before 2016.
  • Bad Export for You: Inverted for the cards themselves; while the Japanese cards are high-quality, modern English cards in rarities SR and above have a more eye-catching glossy finish to them that helps the characters on the cards and textured backgrounds stand out more. The higher rarities also have a raised gold foil finish on the stamps and signatures rather than an engraved one. Played straight for the English metagame as opposed to the Japanese one, which tends to be slower to respond to problematic and unbalanced cards.
    • Key All-stars sold overseas have the illustration of several parallel cards changed into that of the normal card, instead of the borderline nude CG illustrations sold in Japan.
    • Due to Blue Archive being slated for release only 1 month after the annoucement of the release date in January 2024 (announcement for Blue Archive was given in the September 2023 livestream, but the release date was TBA at that time), overseas distributors were not able to respond in time to secure stock for their respective retailers. As a result, overseas retailers were only able to get their stock from their respective distributors in April, not that it had stopped some retailers from importing cases directly from Japan to sell in February.
  • Demand Overload: Due to hololive being the biggest thing in town in 2020, pre-orders for hololive Trial Deck+ and Booster Pack cases skyrocketed to unseen levels in recent years. In fact, domestic demand is so high that sites such as Amiami did not even list hololive for pre-orders at all, and overseas retailers have their allocated cases cut drastically. Post-release, there has been at least 2 re-releases of the first edition (which includes a box topper promo card, a set first/second marker cards, and a 3-point point exchange campaign coupon). Furthermore, the series of Trial Decks+ have also seen at least one cycle of reprint.
  • Feelies: PD/S22-P01 PR "Nice to Meet You!" Hatsune Miku doubles as one for Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F, as the pattern on the card's artwork is compatible with that game's Extra Marker function that allows you to scan the card with the PlayStation Vita camera.
  • Follow the Leader: Union Arena is a similar anime crossover TCG from Namco Bandai that follows the Weiss Schwarz model. It has a greater focus on, but isn't exclusive to, popular Shonen Jump series not already in Weiss such as My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: An unfortunate side effect of being a card game based entirely on being a licensed product; with the exceptions of IPs that Bushiroad actually has a stake in (like Milky Holmes and Love Live!), if a set never gets a reprint, that's it. No new cards ever.
  • Milestone Celebration: Several sets were released as part of the original franchises' anniversaries.
    • A special extra booster containing cards from Da Capo and Little Busters was released as part of the 10th anniversary of 'Weiss''. These two sets were 2 of the 3 pioneer sets (Persona 3 being the third one) and has SSPs formatted to look like the prototype layout.
    • To celebrate the 13th Anniversary of Weiss, Bushiroad is releasing a Chronicle Set for booster sets that have been released for 10 years or more. However, despite planning for many sets, only Persona 3, Little Busters and Da Capo had a Chronicle Set released.
    • For the 15th Anniversary of Weiss, three sets that were released more than 10 years ago were slated to have a Premium Booster released, which was eventually revealed to be King of Fighters, Shakugan no Shana, and Persona 3 (as Persona 3 Reload).
  • No Export for You:
    • Due to Fantasy Flight Games holding the card game license to it in its domestic Western territories, Star Wars and Marvel Universe are limited to Asia only. Official Japanese Weiss tournaments outside Japan do not allow Star Wars decks to participate. Various Marvel and Pixar sets were announced for the English Edition in 2024, but only for release in Asian territories; there has been no word on whether imported cards would be allowed in English Edition tournaments in other countries.
    • Other series that are banned outside of Japan are Macross Frontier (Harmony Gold is to blame as usual), Girlfriend (Beta), School Girl Strikers, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story, and Project SEKAI.
    • Interesting to note is that Magia Record is regarded as the same franchise as Puella Magi Madoka Magica under the neo-standard deck building rules. Thus a Madoka Magica deck is still legitimate to play, as long as no cards from Magia Record is in the deck (i.e. Cards only from the anime and the Rebellion movie). Time will tell if this restriction will be lifted as Magia Record is set for an English release in February 2021.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • Unfortunately, due to rival card game producers Fantasy Flight Games and Ravensburger holding the rights to the same IP's in the West, the Star Wars and other Disney sets are lost to No Export for You territory seemingly permanently, only having a Japanese release for several years and being announced for an Asian-English release in 2024. A handful of online stores will sell overseas, but otherwise no dice.
    • Multiple highly-requested series for Weiss such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, One-Punch Man and Jujutsu Kaisen have no chance of coming to the game (at least as of the time of writing) as they are tied up in Bandai Namco's rival game Union Arena. Not even as English-exclusive sets, as Union Arena is slated for a Western release in Fall 2024.
