Trivia / Toast of London

Go To

  • Actor Allusion:
    • In High Winds Actor, Peter Davison turns up again and Toast mentions that he thinks Jane "might need a Doctor". He's also wearing a very Fifth Doctor-ish linen suit and panama hat. Later on, during Jane's acid trip, she looks at him and hears the sound of the TARDIS.
    • Possibly unintentional but Toast's father (played by BRIAN BLESSED!!!!!) asking "Who said that?" and Toast being referred to as his father's "Other Son" may be a nod to Blackadder where Blessed played the King and where similar exchanges would often occur when he forgot Edmund's existence and his favoured son would have to remind him about his other son. Incidentally, Robert Bathurst (Ed) played the favoured son in the Blackadder pilot.
    • Actor Alan Ford plays an exorcist like homeopath in series two, whilst he had appeared in Exorcist: The Beginning.
    • Terence Harvey plays Lord Fotheringham, who is also a Grand Master in the Freemasons. Harvey also appeared in From Hell playing Ben Kidney, a junior member and an enforcer for the Masons.
  • Casting Gag: In Toast of Tinseltown:Freddie Fox plays a parody of his Father, Edward Fox.
  • Channel Hop: Toast of London aired out its entire run on Channel 4. Its Sequel Series, (Toast of Tinseltown) aired on BBC2 instead however.
  • Reality Subtext: Many of Toast's career beats in Toast of Tinseltown poke fun at Matt Berry's own breakthrough into American acting — he continues to sustain himself through narrating advertisements, the TV show he does with Carmen (Natasia Demetriou, who also appears as herself about to cast in a "vampire comedy") gets him famous at the expense of his character being more popular than he is, and the big Star Wars part he's been anticipating turns out to be a minor voice-only role.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The end credits of Toast of Tinseltown play to a rendition of En Doris' Beatmaker produced by Berry himself and sung by Emma Noble.
  • Series Continuity Error: In the flashback to Toast's wedding in Buried Alive; Ed is seen as a guest, and Ellen encounters Clem Fandango, who she notes is hated by Toast. In the pilot it is implied that Toast did not know Ed before they began flatsharing, whilst he encounters Clem for the first time in Aftertoon Tea, both of which are set after Toast's marriage is almost over.
  • The Other Darrin: Jane Plough is played by Fiona Mollison in the pilot, and Doon Mackichan in the rest of the series.
  • You Look Familiar: Geoffrey McGivern plays two aggressive directors, Acker Herron and Norris Flipjack. He also played the friendlier (though potential Nazi sympathiser) Cliff Promise in the pilot.
