- Box Office Bomb: Schrader claims that it was made for five million and barely pulled a million and a half.
- Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: When the film was re-dubbed into Japanese, Ken Takakura reprised his role. Averted for the other Japanese actors who had their English dialogue dubbed by other actors.
- Throw It In!: The scene of the clubgoers singing "My Darling Clementine" was added after the extras started doing it, unprompted, between takes.
- What Could Have Been:
- Fresh off of Mean Streets, Martin Scorsese lobbied to direct the film, but the studio wanted a more experienced director. Scorsese and screenwriter Paul Schrader would work together a couple years later on Taxi Driver.
- Before Sydney Pollack was hired, Robert Aldrich was set to star with Lee Marvin in the lead.
- Charles Bronson was also considered for the lead. Paul Schrader wanted William Holden.
- Robert Redford considered auditioning for the lead, but pulled himself out of consideration when he decided he was too young for the character.
