Trivia / The Wild Thornberrys

Go To

  • Accidentally Correct Zoology: In one episode, Eliza states that alligators are "the closest things to a living dinosaur", when it should be known at that time that birds are living descendants of dinosaurs. Nowadays, Eliza would be correct in that birds are classified as true dinosaurs, and their closest living relatives are the crocodilians.
  • Acting for Two: Tim Curry not only voices Nigel Thornberry, but also his father Col. Radcliffe.
  • Adored by the Network: Despite being moderately popular at best when it first aired, Nickelodeon pushed it as one of their most valuable commodities, airing it any time they could and even greenlighting two theatrical movies. But they both underperformed.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Donnie is voiced (well, as "voiced" as Donnie gets, anyway) by Flea.
  • The Danza: Donnie's full name is Donald Michael Thornberry; Flea, his voice actor, was born as Michael Peter Balzary.
  • Kids' Meal Toy: Burger King sold a set of four toys in their Kids' Meals in 2000, including a treehouse slide.
  • Missing Episode: Three episodes are missing from Paramount Plus for whatever reason- "The Kung and I", "The Legend of Ha Long Bay" and "Gem of a Mom".
  • The Other Darrin: Biederman was variously voiced by Michael Jeter or Jerry Sroka.
  • Playing Against Type: For once, Tim Curry voices a character who's NOT a homicidal maniac.
  • Screwed by the Network: The series had a two-episode grand finale, but the second part wasn't aired until over a year after the first one. When they did air the actual last episode, it was without much advertisement and most viewers weren't aware of it.
  • Star-Making Role: While Tim Curry already did plenty of voice acting beforehand (such as Peter Pan & the Pirates, FernGully: The Last Rainforest, and Duckman), Nigel Thornberry was the role that truly launched him to stardom in this field. And it, ironically enough, wasn't a villainous character like he usually plays.
  • Tie-In Cereal: The Wild Thornberrys had a cornpuff and marshmallow cereal called "Wild Thornberry's Crunch".
  • What Could Have Been: Originally, the show was going to be focused entirely on the "Nigel Thornberry's Animal World" Show Within a Show, and was an adult-aimed educational program akin to David Attenborough's The Living Planet. This version of the show was originally pitched to Fox, and while Eliza was still present, she wasn't the protagonist. Additionally, Darwin was named Bobo and the Thornberrys also had a dog named Monty.
