Trivia / The Raven Cycle

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Not to the series as a whole, but Maggie Stiefvater has admitted that she likes Joseph Kavinsky a lot less than she used to thanks to his misaimed fanbase. When she finished editing The Raven King, she commented on Twitter that she was really going to miss all these characters... except Kavinsky.
  • Development Hell: Production of the TV adaptation (announced in 2017) seems to have stopped in the development stage.
  • Defictionalization: Several fans have actually written a murder squash song.
    • Maggie Stiefvater actually does own a version of Kavinsky's and later the Gray Man's car, including the splattered knife graphic and the custom license plate. The Pig is also based on a Camaro she used to own.
      • That car apparently burst, spectacularly, into flames. Ironically, this was shortly after her car race with John Green, in which his car caught fire.
  • God Never Said That: Some fans are convinced Joseph Kavinsky is an immigrant. He's actually from New Jersey, although his heritage is Bulgarian.
  • Hypothetical Casting: Maggie has admitted to retroactively picturing Colin Greenmantle as John Mulaney thanks to a fandom joke suggesting that casting.
  • Line to God: Maggie Stiefvater frequently talks to fans on her Twitter account. She formerly had a personal Tumblr that she used to talk to fans as well, but deleted it.
  • Reality Subtext: Per Maggie's own admission, the passage in The Raven King describing Ronan's struggle against the demon impeding his ability to create was "very autobiographical" regarding her own health struggles described under Troubled Production.
  • Release Date Change: The Raven King was scheduled to be released in September 2015, but Maggie Stiefvater needed more editing time, so the release date was moved to February 2016, then early March, then finally April 26.
  • Teasing Creator: While writing The Raven King, Maggie Stiefvater enjoyed posting bizarre snippets from the book without giving any context just to drive the fandom crazy.
    • Maggie also borders on Trolling Creator from time to time, specifically when it comes to Gansey's death. Whenever fans would make reference to Gansey living or pleaded with her not to kill him, her comments could basically be summed up as, "Hahaha, that boy is going down."
  • Troubled Production: While writing The Raven King, Maggie began suffering from undiagnosed adrenal insufficiency that caused extreme fatigue and memory problems, which contributed to her struggle to write and edit the book.
  • What Could Have Been: Maggie originally planned to have the Pig break down every time her real Camaro it was based on broke down. She was ultimately forced to give up on this plan not because the real car failed to live up to the Pig's status as The Alleged Car, but because the real Camaro broke down even more often than the Pig, and the characters needed a form of transportation even when the real Camaro was out of commission.
