• California Doubling: Set in Paris, but shot in Italy and Hungary.
• Fake Nationality: The characters are French, but the actors are mostly Italian, with a few Hungarians and Brits.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Argento's first choice to play the Phantom was John Malkovich.
  • The Phantom was supposed to be disfigured like his book counterpart, but Julian Sands refused to wear facial prosthetics.
  • Rumour has it Dario Argento's original cut of the film ran almost an hour longer and that the version which was finally released, has been heavily re-cut and changed by the producers to assure the film's appeal to wider audiences.
