• Release Date Change:
  • The rewritten version of the webcomic was initially planned to launch in 2020, but got delayed due to setbacks caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The release date for Book 1 was eventually moved to April 16, 2022.
  • "The Avatar Returns: Part IV" was originally scheduled to be released on May 28, 2022, but was pushed back a week to June 4th in observation of Memorial Day weekend in the United States. This also had the effect of delaying the release of "The Avatar Returns: Part V" from June 11, 2022 to June 18.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Instead of Maya, the sixth main character was originally going to be a bloodbender from the Northern Water Tribe named Yuuga.
  • Back when the webcomic was still being conceptualized, the Earth Federation was called the Earth Kingdom Republic.
  • The Ocean Folk were originally called the Kdeba.
  • This Concept Art uploaded by MackyDraws in 2015 shows Kalsang having a younger sister named Tsomo. The writing team later dropped this idea as they felt that it would better suit Kalsang's character if he were an only child.
  • According to this Tumblr post, Nami's mother Sessi was originally going to be deceased by the start of the series. When the story was revised, it was reworked so that she was still alive.
  • MackyDraws originally conceived the character Maya as being a nonbender who used chi-blocking techniques instead of being a bender of an unknown element.
  • Kalsang and Maya were originally also going to be 17 at the start of Book 1 like Genji, Luan, and Aiko. At some point in development, Kalsang got aged up to 18 while Maya was aged down to 16.
  • This 2016 Tumblr post shows that Macky Neals originally intended Jade to be a metalbender with an interest in architecture instead of a lavabender.
  • Samir was originally named Sora. In addition, he and his twin San were 17-years-old instead of 19.
  • Toph II was also going to be 12-years-old instead of a teenager.
  • This archived webpage from the creator's website indicates that Iroh II was originally going to be the Fire Lord at the start of Book 1 instead of his sister.
  • According to this Tumblr post, Fire Lord Shizuka was originally called Mayumi and was going to be married to Mako. The idea for this was that after divorcing his first wife, Mako fell in love with Mayumi (who was a princess since this was back when Iroh II was planned to be the next Fire Lord) and eventually fathered two sons with her. Also, instead of being an elderly woman, Mayumi was also going to be closer to Mako's age.
• Word of Gay: The creators have confirmed that Kalsang is gay on a social media post.
