Trivia / The Island of Misfit Christmas Specials

Go To

  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • Both the reviews of Hanna-Barbera crossover specials Yogi's First Christmas and Casper's First Christmas call Augie Doggie's father "Augie Daddy" when from day one Augie's "dear ol' dad" has always been called Doggie Daddy.
    • The review of Olaf's Frozen Adventure treats it as the Frozen Franchise Killer, with the negative reception towards its theatrical run resulting in Frozen II grossing less than Frozen (2013)... even though Frozen II became the Disney Animated Canon's highest-grossing movie, prompting Disney+ to keep Frozen alive via more shorts about Olaf. Even adjusting for inflation, Frozen II has a higher box-office gross than Frozen did. Frozen II does have a worse critical reception than Frozen, but Olaf's Frozen Adventure doesn't deserve as much credit as do critics who simply consider Frozen II inferior to the original.
  • Dear Negative Reader:
    • Peter begins the review of Christopher The Christmas Tree by admitting that he found the special boring when he first saw it, and only wrote a review because many of his readers demanded it. Anticipating comments calling the review as dull as the special itself (which he previously received after giving in to requests to cover Santa and the Three Bears), he warns readers that "if you hate what you're about to read, it's your own fault."
    • Peter expresses similar feelings in his review of Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa which was also requested ad nauseum by fans. Before he starts critiquing the special, he says, "You may want this right NOW, but I guarantee in a few years you'll be so sick of hearing about Rapsittie Street Kids that you'll wonder why I even bothered writing about it. This means if I want to cover every Misfit Special in existence, I need to do this one TODAY while there's still a tolerance for it." He wraps it up with "To everyone who kept requesting this special, this is on your heads and I hope you're happy with yourselves."
  • Hypothetical Casting: Peter recalls in his review of A Wish For Wings That Work that Bloom County creator Berke Breathed designated the late Sterling Holloway as his #1 choice to voice Opus. Peter admits personally finding that an inappropriate choice, but adds that he could relate to Breathed because of his unfulfilled desire for Brittany Murphy to voice Electric Wonderland's Aerynn Arlia.
  • Schedule Slip: Peter's review of Lady Gaga & The Muppets' Holiday Spectacular didn't appear on Platypus Comix until mid-January 2016. He blames the delay on him actually liking the special, which he was expecting to bash shamelessly. As an additional consequence, as he notes, the review came out very shortly after Gaga controversially won a Golden Globe for American Horror Story: Hotel, then adds, "if I had the foresight to know the timing would have been this bad, I would have skipped Christmas and New Year's and just spent the entire week banging on the keys."
  • What Could Have Been: Peter initially announced on the Toonzone forums that as a Milestone Celebration, the 50th review would cover a special selected by the readers, but as he explained in the actual article, no one had an idea on what to cover, so Peter almost dropped the whole Milestone Celebration thing until he discovered Siskel & Ebert's Holiday Video Gift Guide in his father's own collection, and made it the subject of the review.
