, Warner Bros. initially wanted to release the film in early 2013, but was convinced by their distribution chief to change it to summers after two very positive test screenings. - Sleeper Hit: The movie was released in an overcrowded summer without much fanfare or promotion, not to mention having an R rating. Despite all of that, it went on to take $41.5 million during the opening weekend, breaking The Purge's previous record as the biggest opening for an original R-rated horror film. It cruised past $100 million domestically with ease, making it one of the most successful R-rated horror films.
