• Aluminum Christmas Trees: The Teach Yourself series is a real series of books first published in England in 1938, which became massively popular with the British public during World War II. While not quite as all-encompassing as presented in the film, they covered a broad range of topics, including some pretty obscure ones, so it might have seemed there was a book for every subject.
• Very Loosely Based on a True Story: The film is based on the real-life case of Walburga "Dolly" Oesterreich, who concealed her lover in her attic for ten years with no one—including Dolly's husband—the wiser. In real life, the story ended in murder.
