  • Actor-Inspired Element: One of Sam Elliott's conditions was to have him carry a rifle in a scene, instead of the scripted shotgun. In fact, he even provided his own rifle.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: J. K. Simmons signed on to work with Robert Duvall, only to discover that they wouldn't actually be onset at the same time.
  • Deleted Scene: A scene was cut of Nick attempting to smoke a cigarette against his doctor's orders, and consequently passing out from intolerance.
  • Executive Meddling: The film initially had a difficult time finding a studio to pick it up since all of them insisted that the ending and tone be changed to a more anti-smoking stance.
  • Throw It In!: William H. Macy came up with the line, "The great state of Vermont will not apologize for its cheese." His original line was, "Why, you son of a..."
  • Wag the Director: Sam Elliott wanted his character to refuse to take the money. Jason Reitman spent three hours persuading him to do the part as scripted.
