Trivia / Superman & Lois

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • In the time honored-tradition of Superman actors, Tyler Hoechlin reprises his role as Superman and also plays Bizarro in Season 2.
    • Elizabeth Tulloch plays Earth-Prime Lois and the one from John and Natalie's Earth, as well as Bizarro Lois.
    • Jordan Elsass, Alex Garfin, Adam Rayner, and Emmanuelle Chriqui all play the main and Bizarro versions of their characters in Season 2.
  • Acting in the Dark: According to Alex Garfin, some of the main cast including himself in Season 1, didn't know until receiving the script for episode 7 that The Stranger was actually John Henry Irons.
  • Actor-Inspired Element: For Season 4, the costume department is allowing Erik Valdez (Kyle) to wear black boots that belonged to his late father as a way to honour him.
  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Erik Valdez is, like his character Kyle Cushing, a Latino man.
    • Inde Navarrette, as his daughter Sarah, is also half Latina (Mexican on her dad's side).
  • Author's Saving Throw: In Season 3, giving Clark and Jon more solo father-son scenes and having Clark publicly confront Jon's attacker helped alleviate some fan criticism of the show's handling of their relationship in Season 2. In addition, Clark also verbally acknowledges Jon's Kryptonian side in Season 3, something fans felt had been neglected by the show since Season 1, when Lois had called Jon an "extraordinary human".
  • The Danza: Inverted. Jordan Elsass plays the twin who's not named Jordan. "Elsass" also sounds close to "El".
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Hoechlin put on a lot of pounds to match Superman's traditional Heroic Build in the comics.
  • Fake American: Michael Bishop, who plays Jon Kent starting in Season 3, is Australian.
  • Late Export for You: Nobody initially picked up the show in the UK, so it didn't air there until December 2021, ten months after it started in the US. While most of the Arrowverse shows are on Sky, and Batwoman ended up on E4, Superman & Lois was eventually picked up by The BBC, who gave the show a weekly airing on BBC One, but since the first season had already finished in the US by then, they also decided to release the entire season in one go on the BBC iPlayer. Ironically, this will probably result in Superman & Lois getting better awareness and ratings in the UK compared to the Arrowverse franchise, which except for Batwoman are behind a paywall.
  • Line to God: Elizabeth Tulloch intentionally wears pearl stud earrings as an homage to Lois Lane wearing them in the comics and the animated series, and also sought fans' opinions on her wardrobe for the series.
  • Mutually Fictional: Like in the rest of the Arrowverse, Injustice 2 is shown being played at various points in the first season; presumably the in-universe game lacks details that would out the civilian identities of any of the superheroes included.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • The roles of Samuel Lane and Morgan Edge have been recast for this series from their Arrowverse appearances - Dylan Walsh and Adam Rayner respectively play the characters now. In Sam's case, this may be explained by the series taking place on a separate Earth from Supergirl (2015), where he first appeared. Whereas Adam Rayner's Morgan Edge is actually Kryptonian Tal-Rho using an alias.
    • The Latin-American Spanish dub is handled by SDI Media México, and therefore, voice actors who participate in the Grupo Macías dubs of the Arrowverse are recasted due to creative differences between studios.
    • Jordan Elsass, who played Jonathan Kent, left the show after Season 2 for unspecified personal reasons; the role was then picked up by Michael Bishop for Season 3 and 4.
    • On the Brazilian Portuguese dub, John Diggle is voiced by Clécio Souto instead of Jorge Lucas, who voices him in other shows from the Arrowverse. This happens because Lucas voices Sam Lane here.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: The series has surprised viewers with impressive special effects and a cinematic Letterbox look. It contrasts the perceived reputation of the Arrowverse series, leading to people thinking the series was "co-funded" by HBO Max with a bigger budget. The claim is backed up by two different Deadline reports being misconstrued. The first report with showrunner Todd Helbing essentially talked about changing the cinematography inspired by, and competing with, other streaming series with no mention of a budget increase. The second report talks about HBO Max and The CW in talks to co-produce any potential summer original series, postdating the production of Superman & Lois which is a Fall-Spring seasonal show. Eventually, Helbing addressed the rumor in a January 2022 interview on Seth Everett's Hall of Justice podcast.
Todd Helbing: “I don’t know where that rumor came from… but it’s not true.”
Adam Mallingernote : "...it comes down to selecting cinematographers with a different kind of style. Todd's years on The Flash also gave him a lot of education in how to spend money on VFX more effectively."
  • Refitted for Sequel: Onomatopoeia was originally intended to appear back in Arrow, but the creators were advised not to use him by Kevin Smith due to his comic book gimmick (where he only speaks in the onomatopoeia of his murder weapons) being impossible to adapt directly in live-action. Now, the character is a major villain in Season 3, this time with a different, but thematically related and more technically feasible gimmick that makes more sense for the medium.
  • Release Date Change: A COVID-19 outbreak on set of the filming forced the first season to be put on hiatus after the fifth episode, because there weren't any new episodes ready to air. The sixth season of Supergirl had to take over for seven weeks to allow the series to catch up.
  • Role Reprise: In Season 2, Jenna Dewan reprises her role of Lois' sister Lucy, the first time she's appeared since Season 1 of Supergirl.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin have enough physical similarities between them to convincingly play fraternal twin brothers. Elsass’s replacement Michael Bishop looks he could be Garfin’s brother in real life, with Garfin joking he should keep the Aussie accent while he’s in-character.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Early conceptions for this series had Clark and Lois' twins be a son and daughter before they got changed to both children being sons.
    • The first episode was supposed to have a small scene featuring a photo of Clark, Lois and Kara together.
      • Leaked script pages from the pilot contained references to Supergirl, The Flash and the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
    • Following Crisis on Infinite Earths (2019) the show was supposed be part of the annual Arrowverse crossover. It was supposed to make a crossover with Batwoman only but would feature other Arrowverse characters. The crossover was scrapped because of the COVID-19 pandemic and in its place there was a Cross Through focusing on John Diggle instead.
  • Word of God: The series's Broad Strokes connections to the Arrowverse have been said by the creators to be a result of production issues relating to COVID, which, for example, nixed the planned Batwoman crossover. The season finale for Season 2 later reveals that this series takes place on another Earth.
