The Best of Smallville

Jordan continues to work to balance his social life with the fallout from his emerging powers. Jonathan's social woes grow as life in Smallville furthers him from what he left behind in Metropolis. Lois and Chrissy continue their investigation into the Powells and their ties to Morgan Edge. The Stranger investigates Lois to gain an understanding of this world's Superman.

Tropes:

  • Back from the Dead: Derek claims to have been resurrected.
  • Blatant Lies: Both Chrissy and Lois immediately spot that Sharon and Derek's story is BS.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even as a teenager, Clark is already shown to have been like this, being berated by Martha for it.
  • Cliffhanger: The final scene has Tag suddenly speed in and ambush Jordan, blaming him for his condition while pummeling him.
  • Drowning My Sorrows:
    • Kyle gets drunk after one of his fellow firefighters, Tom Mitchell, suffers possibly permanent lung damage from smoke inhalation during the fire at the community center.
    • Jonathan sneaks some liquor with some friends at the harvest festival after Eliza breaks up with him. He's hammered in no time flat.
  • Due to the Dead: Martha Kent gets a bench dedicated to her honour.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Leslie Larr and Derek Powell seem to be an item, as they are seen kissing.
  • Flashback: To Clark as a teenager, a year after his father died.
  • Irony: Captain Luthor, under his civilian identity of Marcus Bridgewater, has been working for this Earth's version of Lex Luthor in the past.
  • Just Friends: Sarah wants to keep her relationship with Jordan at this level for now.
  • Mythology Gag: Clark mentions that Smallville was founded in 1949. This is the year the town was first named in a Superboy comic.
  • The Nose Knows: Clark is able to smell that Jonathan is drunk well before he's close enough for Lois to do the same.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: A reference to REO Speedwagon flies right over Jordan's head.
  • Possession Burnout: Implicitly the case with Derek, who seems to be inhabited by the essence of another Kryptonian. After a brief fight with Superman, his powers go haywire and his heat vision immolates his body.
  • The Reveal:
    • Edge's talk of resurrection involves literally resurrecting Kryptonian spirits in human bodies. The process doesn't seem to be stable.
    • Captain Luthor was married to the Lois Lane of his world.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title appears on the plaque dedicating the bench to Martha.
  • Trauma Button: Seeing Jonathan drunk sets Sarah off, as her father seems to be drunk on a regular basis. It's enough to get Jonathan to sober up a little.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: After replacing the destroyed donations for the harvest festival, Morgan Edge further gets into the town's good graces, Lana included.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Derek Powell gets killed after barely being introduced as a character.
  • Wham Line:
    • Derek calls Superman "Kal-El" and tells him he's no longer alone.
    • Captain Luthor notes Lois is almost exactly like the one from his world "except she married someone else."
