Trivia / Super Mario World (1991)

Go To

  • Franchise Killer: It was the final Super Mario cartoon to be produced by DIC Entertainment, thanks to low ratings, unfavorable reception, NBC giving the series practically no promotion and DiC losing the Mario rights not long after the show ended. It was also the final Mario Animated Adaptation before the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.
  • Non-Singing Voice: In "Gopher Bash", when Mario, Luigi and Yoshi sing the final verse of "Cheatsy's Life", they're voiced by John Stocker instead of Walker Boone, Tony Rosato and Andrew Sabiston.
  • The Other Darrin: Twice in the Italian dub.
    • Starting from "The Night Before Cave Christmas", Bully is voiced by Giovanni Battezzato instead of Giorgio Melazzi.
    • In "The Yoshi Shuffle", Cheatsy is voiced by Paolo Marchese instead of his usual voice actor Enrico Maggi. As Marchese was the regular voice of Big Mouth, the latter is instead voiced by Paolo Torrisi (who voiced Kooky otherwise).
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The Children's Television Act of 1990 came into effect that year, and since Merchandise-Driven cartoons could not actively promote the product the cartoons were based on under the law, NBC had no idea what to do with the series and gave it the bare minimum of promotion as to avoid being caught by the FCC's radar.
  • Screwed by the Network: NBC gave this treatment to the cartoon's entire run. Viewers relying on word-of-mouth rather than commercials just to catch a new episode was the first straw. Being produced on a smaller budget than The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, and thus limiting the episodes to one segment in each Captain N episode, instead of two with Super Mario Bros. 3, was the second straw. The last straw, however, came when NBC halted production of the series without any prior announcement, then canceling it and its fellow NBC cartoons altogether as part of NBC's take-down of their Saturday morning block and replacement by teen-oriented TNBC. Its time slot was then occupied by local news.
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: Despite being cancelled after just 13 episodes, it has become a staple of YouTube Poop artists.
  • Troubled Production: Perry Martin, writers of "Ghosts R Us", flat-out admitted that he had no ideas for the episode and was completely burnt out on writing for the Mario cartoons. Due to a software error, his script for the episode ended up being wiped entirely, forcing him to rewrite it from memory within two hours.
I was really burned out on the Mario Bros. by then. I just had nothing more to say about those characters and their world, so I struggled to write it. I mean, I suffered over every word. I didn’t like what I was doing, and that’s torture for a writer. I slaved over that script and was never happier to get to the end of something in my life.
  • You Sound Familiar: John Stocker (Oogtar) previously played Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
  • What Could Have Been: In the original series pitch, Oogtar was named Bartzan and was described as "a prehistoric cave kid resembling Bart Simpson"; no guesses where they got that inspiration from. Its believed fear of legal repercussions made go in a different direction.
