• Cast the Expert: Quite aside from the NCAA and elite gymnasts filling in the supporting and extras ranks, Tricia Skilken was played by former senior elite gymnast Tarah Paige, and Mina Hoyt by Division I NCAA gymnast Maddy Curley.
• Dyeing for Your Art: All the actresses playing gymnasts went through rigorous workout and training regimes for four months before filming to have the physiques necessary for gymnasts and to do stunts where needed.
• Dawson Casting: 17-year-old Haley is played by 24-year-old Missy Peregrym.
• Fake American: Haley, a resident of Plano, Texas, is played by Canadian actress Missy Peregrym, whose accent can be heard to slip in from time to time. Joanne is played by Vanessa Lengies who is also Canadian.
• Reality Subtext: Nastia Liukin was, in fact, the real-life U.S. Uneven Bars Champion in 2006 — for the second time in a row.
