Trivia / Star Wars Customizable Card Game

  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Despite high popularity, spending much of its run-time as the second-most popular CCG in the world behind only Magic: The Gathering (and occasionally even passing it in sales), the game met an untimely demise when Lucasfilm declined to renew Decipher's license for the Star Wars franchise in 2001, passing it instead to one of Decipher's competitors, Wizards of the Coast.
  • What Could Have Been: Decipher had plans for additional expansions in the works prior to their license being cancelled by Lucasfilm. The original plan had been to continue producing mini-expansions set in the timeline of the original trilogy and focusing on Star Wars's extensive Expanded Universe while also publishing material related to the then-new prequel trilogy in parallel. However, this approach was ultimately abandoned after the considerable success of the "Death Star II" expansion and Lucasfilm pushing Decipher to integrate the prequel cards with the game as much as possible. Decipher opted to roll some of the cards and ideas they had into future full-size expansions, while others were simply abandoned. The five expansions that were originally planned were:
    • "Shadows of the Empire", based off the EU project of the same name and ultimately rolled into the "Reflections II" set
    • "Skywalkers", designed around Luke, Leia, and Anakin/Darth Vader and including a new mechanic that would use cards to add new capabilities to character cards to use them in "new and intriguing ways"; said mechanic was never implemented and the parts of the expansion that were ultimately finished were merged with the "Tatooine" expansion.
    • "Jedi Masters", based on Jedi characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Emperor Palpatine.
    • "Scoundrels", focusing on Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Jabba the Hutt, and the bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back.
    • "Reflections Gold", the fourth and final "Reflections" block. According to Decipher staff, this set was almost complete at the time the license expired, but the staff hadn't had time to finalize and test the cards. They asked for permission to finish the set and release it as a giveaway after the license expiration as a "going-away present" to their fans, but were ultimately denied by Lucasfilm. A few of the cards ultimately did get leaked and make their way onto the open market, but they are not legal in any play format, are amongst the most difficult cards to obtain in all of Star Wars CCG, and routinely sell for hundreds of dollars on the rare times they are put up for auction.
