• Prop Recycling: Alkar's ship is a reuse of the Straleb security vessel model from "The Outrageous Okona".
• Recycled Script: It's basically a more sinister version of "Sarek", where a diplomat telepathically channels all his unwanted emotions into another person. Unlike "Sarek", however, where the projection was done against the diplomat's desires (and without the diplomat's knowledge), Alkar does it deliberately. In addition, Picard chose to take on Sarek's unwanted emotions for a few hours, whereas Alkar's victims are unknowingly forced to do so until it kills them.
• Troubled Production: The script had a much tighter deadline than usual, primarily because James Doohan wouldn't be available to film "Relics" when originally expected. Jeri Taylor also cited the prolonged failure to get a proposed Q episode ("Q Makes Two") off the ground. Different writers wrote different acts simultaneously to make the deadline, with Frank Abatemarco then tasked with the resulting patch job.
