  • Creator Backlash: A minor example. While the writers are very happy with the episode overall, they have said they were very disappointed with their commentary on smoking, feeling that, since it's such an easy target, they should have done something more subtle.
  • Recycled Script: This story idea (about a group of Ferengi, who happen to be the Roswell aliens) was originally submitted to Star Trek: The Next Generation many years before. The writers liked it, however, could not find a way to make it work in that series. Eventually, the idea was resurrected and reworked for DS9.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • One early draft of the script ended with Rex Denning swearing everyone present to secrecy, including one soldier who has only been seen in the background up to this point.
Denning: You haven't seen anything that has gone on here tonight. You got that, Lieutenant Roddenberry?
Lt. Roddenberry: Yes, sir! (Looks up to the sky as Quark's ship disappears into space).note
    • Originally, Quark was going to become addicted to smoking, and then have to learn to go without when he returns to the future.
  • You Look Familiar:
    • Lt General Rex Denning is played by Charles Napier, who played "Space Hippie" Adam in TOS episode "The Way to Eden".
    • Megan Gallagher returns to the show as Faith Garland, after playing Mareel in "Invasive Procedures". The original script called for a "Megan Gallagher type" for the role, and the showrunners eventually just contacted Gallagher herself.
