Trivia / Soundgarden

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: "Black Hole Sun" is a more conventional hard rock and psychedelic rock song compared to the alternative metal they often produced. It is also their most popular song.
  • Chart Displacement: Their only song to enter the Hot 100 was "Black Rain", primarily because the 1994 rules excluded songs without physical releases such as "Black Hole Sun" (which topped the Mainstream Rock chart, hit #2 at the Alternative, and entered the Airplay top 40).
  • Creator Backlash: According to this article, Kim Thayil claims the band did not like many of the music videos they made, with "Jesus Christ Pose" and "Black Hole Sun" being prime exceptions.
  • Creator's Oddball: "Half" from Superunknown. While other Soundgarden songs have a bit of Indian/Middle Eastern flavor, it's extremely overt in this song, sounding little like anything else they made. It is also sung by Ben Shepherd, with an intentionally high-pitched and warbling delivery that aims to sound like a Creepy Child in stark contrast to Cornell's epic screaming.
  • Dead Artists Are Better: While Chris Cornell was always respected, the "greatest range in rock music" label only started to be put on him after his death.
  • Defictionalization: Pearl Jam's bassist Jeff Ament created a made-up set list for the Fake Band in Singles, and Cornell decided to pen songs to match each title. One of those was "Spoonman" (which eventually became a song from Superunknown, and even has an early version in the movie).
  • Died During Production: Cornell's sudden death on their 2017 tour, later confirmed to be suicide by hanging. The band were also in the process of recording their seventh album when he died, and no further comments on the status of the album have been made. Kim Thayil has expressed that they want to get the album out with his vocal demos, but that certain unnamed parties had thus far stymied all efforts to do so.
  • One-Hit Wonder: Despite over ten million records sold in the US and one of the biggest bands of their era, they only had one hit on the mainstream charts: "Black Hole Sun", which fared incredibly well on top 40 radio, peaking at #24 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay and #9 on Billboard's Top 40 Airplay chart. The lack of a commercial single was all that kept it from cracking the Hot 100 at the time.
  • The Pete Best: Hiro Yamamoto, the band's original bassist until he quit and was replaced by Jason Everman and ultimately Ben Shepherd. A lesser example would be Scott Sundquist, the drummer who took over Chris Cornell's drumming duties until he also quit and was replaced by Matt Cameron.

    • Guitar Hero Live: One song in the game through Live and GHTV is "Been Away Too Long" by Soundgarden.

Miscellaneous Trivia

  • The master tape for Badmotorfinger was one of many confirmed casualties of the 2008 Universal Studios vault fire, which allegedly destroyed recordings by over 700 artists (at least 19 of whom, Soundgarden included, were confirmed in a 2020 court filing). Because of this, the 25th anniversary edition in 2016 had to source its audio from a digital backup.
