Trivia / Sonic and the Black Knight

Go To

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Some fans took issue with Sonic using a sword in Black Knight, pointing to how Sonic said he 'would never be caught dead with one of those' in Shadow the Hedgehog. The thing is, Sonic wasn't referring to a sword in that context, but a gun.
  • Dummied Out: The game has a lot of unused voice clips. Sonic has one calling out a "Gale Drive" attack. Additionally, each knight has clips describing effects called Fire Blitz, Thunder Blitz, Ice Blitz, Venom Blitz, Panic Blitz, and Stone Blitz; it sounds like an enemy or boss would have made use of them.
  • End of an Age: Black Knight would be the last Sonic game that long-time series writer Shiro Maekawa worked on, before departing from Sega shortly after. It was also the final non-crossover game that the 4kids voice cast worked on, before the cast shake-up in Sonic Colors. Really puts the whole "everything has its end" theme into context.
  • Fake Brit: Merlina is voiced by Melissa Hutchison, who is American.
  • Franchise Killer: Black Knight's poor critical reception and commercial failure, on top of Sega's restructuring of the franchise in 2010, would ultimately result in the death of the Sonic Storybook Series.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: Shiro Maekawa is most proud of Black Knight's story, due to how solid and concise the story and its themes are. Critics didn't care much about the game due to the gameplay being considered somewhat mediocre. That being said, Black Knight's story has been Vindicated by History among fans, who often consider it among the best stories in the franchise.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Before the Storybook spinoffs got canned as a result of this game, Sega held a vote for the subject of the third game. Greek mythology seemed to be the number one choice.
    • According to Shiro Maekawa, in his first drafts Caliburn was a girl, but this was changed, much to his surprise. Might explain Caliburn's Moe eyes too.
  • Working Title: According to Jason Griffith, the game was once called something like Sonic and the Knights of the Round Table, and when he first heard about the Sonic and the Black Knight title he mistakenly assumed it was a game he wasn't part of.
