• The Cast Showoff: Although somewhat playing against type, Mandy Moore still has to have a scene where she gets to show off her beautiful singing voice.
• The Danza: Pastor Skip's son, Patrick, is played by Patrick Fugit.
• Dawson Casting: A mixed bag. Some were very close to the ages of the characters like Jena Malone (19), Mandy Moore (19), and Eva Amurri (18) when the movie had its initial limited release in January 2004 at Sundance. Others, like Macaulay Culkin, were in their early 20s. There's also the fact that the filming dates for the movie were late 2002 early 2003, when the cast was even younger.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Originally, Hilary Faye was meant to snap and shoot up the prom Columbine-style with a rifle upon being expelled.
  • The role of Hilary Faye was originally intended to be played by Anne Hathaway. However, funding for the film fell through, and by time funding was restored, Hathaway had already been committed to play Ella in Ella Enchanted.
  • In the original film script, the Christian band The Elms was scheduled to play at Hilary Faye's prom. The band backed out of the role one week before that scene was to be filmed, as the band did not approve of the film's portrayal of Christianity. Several Christian musicians in Vancouver, whom the film crew sought to replace The Elms, also rejected the role. As a result, the film features a band named Godflight instead, playing on Hilary's radio and at her prom.
