• Disowned Adaptation: Neither the late Yves Saint Laurent's estate nor YSL's lover Pierre Bergé approved of this biopic.
• Dueling Works: Came out the same year as the authorized Yves Saint Laurent and competed with that film for film awards. The rivalry didn't extend to the actors, however, as Pierre Niney paid homage to Gaspard Ulliel when the latter died in a skiing accident in January 2022.
• Fake Nationality: The Belgian Jérémie Renier as the French Pierre Bergé.
• Queer Character, Queer Actor: The older Laurent is played by bisexual actor Helmut Berger.
