Trivia / Rugrats (2021)

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Betty is now at least partly Latina, to match her voice actress's ethnicity as Natalie Morales is of Cuban-American descent. By extension, this makes Phil and Lil partly Latine as well.
  • Ascended Fanon: The Barney Bunch depicted Betty as the leader of a pack of lesbians called the Betty Bunch. The 2021 reboot makes Betty a lesbian and subsequently adapts out Howard, although the showrunners say that Howard might appear later in the series.
  • Channel Hop: Instead of being produced by Klasky-Csupo, the show is produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. KC had ceased functioning as an animation studio over a decade ago, despite several attempts to restart operations. Their logo appears as a Vanity Plate for their founders, who are merely producers. It was moved to Paramount+, but aired on Nickelodeon proper in August 2021.
    • In February 2024, Season 2's cable premieres moved to Nicktoons, including the second half that was originally scheduled for Paramount+. Those episodes would release on Apple TV shortly after their TV airings, instead of their original service.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: The episode Rescuing Cynthia is mistakenly called Saving Cynthia (probably confused with the All Grown Up! episode with that title) in some TV guides. In the Dutch dub, both episodes have the same title, Cynthia Redden.
  • Dueling Shows: With Animaniacs (2020), another reboot of a popular 90's cartoon. While this show was successful to the point where it beat Kamp Koral in popularity, the reboot of Animaniacs gained a larger fandom than the reboot of Rugrats did. Animaniacs ended after three seasons on January 17th, 2023, while Rugrats' second season premiered on April 14th, 2023.
  • Milestone Celebration: This revival comes a whopping 30 years after the original series premiered.
  • No Export for You: It's a Paramount+ exclusive, but unfortunately Paramount+ isn't available in Asia note  as of 2023 and they're refusing to put it on Nickelodeon in regions where Paramount+ isn't available.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: As of March 2024, the series has been removed from Nickelodeon's website and Paramount+. The only way to watch it is through digital platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, iTunes and on DVD (Season 1 only)
  • The Other Darrin: All of the voice actors of the adults, as well as several other characters, have been recast, both living and dead:
    • Ashley Rae Spillers and Swoosie Kurtz replace Melanie Chartoff as Didi and Minka, respectively.
    • Natalie Morales replaces Kath Soucie as Betty, despite Soucie returning as Phil and Lil.
    • Tony Hale, Timothy Simons, and Henry Winkler replace Michael Bell as Chas, Drew, and Boris, respectively.
    • Anna Chlumsky replaces Tress MacNeille as Charlotte.
    • Nicole Byer replaces Cheryl Carter as Lucy after Carter's death in 2013.
    • Michael McKean, Thomas Dewey, and Omar Benson Miller replaced the late Joe Alaskeynote , the late Jack Riley, and the late Ron Glass as Lou, Stu, and Randy, respectively, after they all passed away in 2016.
    • Alicyn Packard (The Mr. Men Show, Yo-kai Watch) replaces the late Dana Hill as Josh.
    • Charlet Chung replaces Dionne Quan as Kimi, following the latter's retirement from acting in 2015.
    • Antony Del Rio replaces Dan Castellaneta as Jonathan.
    • Reptar didn't have a consistent actor in the original series, but he's consistently voiced by Fred Tatasciore here.
    • In "Reptar's Mama", Chuckie's mother Melinda is voiced by Nancy Cartwright instead of her original voice actor Kim Cattrall.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Betty's a lesbian in the reboot and her voice actress for the reboot, Natalie Morales, is bisexual.
  • Recycled Script: "I, Baby" borrows a similar plot to "Real or Robots?" from the original 1991 series. Both episodes involve one character believing another character to be a robot after seeing a horror movie where a mad scientist replaces humans with robots.
  • Role Reprise:
  • Screwed by the Network: Since February 20, 2024, the second half of the second season, which was originally intended for Paramount+, started airing on the Nicktoons Network cable channel, resulting in people having to rely on word-of-mouth to see its episodes.note  As of March 2024, the series has been removed from Nickelodeon's website and Paramount+. However, the series is still available for purchase on Apple TV, Google Play, and Amazon Prime, and Season 1 has been released on DVD as well. The show is still in production as episodes will still air on Nicktoons as they're completed. However, one new episode ("The Tommy/Breaking Begley") showed up on Amazon Prime video with no warning, using the original air date despite not airing on TV yet.
  • What Could Have Been: According to character bios leaked online, Howard was originally intended to be introduced as a manny Betty hired to help take care of Phil and Lil.
  • Word of Gay: Betty, Phil and Lil's mom, is confirmed to be a lesbian in the reboot (voiced by Natalie Morales, a queer actor).
