  • All-Star Cast:
  • The Cast Show Off: Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth get some elaborate singing numbers as their characters.
  • The Danza:
    • Janelle Monáe cameos as the veterinarian Dr. Monae.
    • Philip Lawrence as Felipe, the head Red Macaw.
  • Deleted Scene: An alternative version of Blu and Jewel's conversation after the football match. Blu wants to go back to Rio, but Jewel wants the family to stay in the Amazon, and Blu discusses how he's not like the other macaws and all the torture he spended his time in the Amazon. He also says how he doesn't fit in with Jewel's family. Jewel eventually snaps and accidentally screams to him why he doesn't go back to Rio by himself. This hurts Blu even more, and he flies away, leaving Jewel remorseful for what she just said to her husband. You can see it right here
    • A cut shot from the film had Roberto reveal a leg band saying "P♥lly" on it as further proof he once was in captivity with humans to Blu. Though in the junior novel for the film the scene is kept in.
    • Jewel was originally going to accompany Blu in confronting the loggers, reuniting by his side after saving him from one before they alongside Linda and Tulio face the logging operation together until the blue macaw tribe arrives with Eduardo leading the way with the Carla, Bia, and Tiago in tow to aid them in driving the loggers off.
    • An alternate scene of Blu entering the red macaw tribe's territory where Felipe had a different design and was more no-nonsense and imitating alongside after Eduardo and Roberto find out about their "war" with the Red Macaw tribe only Roberto tells Blu to stay behind.
  • Franchise Killer: Rio 2 became a box office success upon release, but the film's mixed reviews caused the third movie to enter Development Hell. Not to mention that Blue Sky Studios was later closed down by their new owners Disney in 2021. However, a "next installment in the Rio franchise" was mentioned in the Adventures of Buck Wild production notes released months after Blue Sky Studios was shut down which has yet to materialize.
  • Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: As with the first film, Rodrigo Santoro voiced Tulio in English and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Real-Life Relative: Zoe Mora, Eva's Latin American Spanish voice actress, is the daughter of Blu's LA voice actor, Moisés Iván Mora.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Roberto was originally going to be a tough, intimidating bird. His parts were rewritten after Bruno Mars was cast.
    • Fernando was originally going to join Tulio and Linda on their expedition, even finding the blue macaw feather. Also, the trio would have encountered a native Amazonian tribe, who would end up pointing the way.
    • An early plot draft involved Bia becoming afraid to fly after accidentally embarrassing herself during her first attempt.
    • An alternate climax of the film seemingly involved another wildfire caused by loggers breaking out again and with the Spix's tribe, Blu and his family on the run from it evidenced by earlier concept art.
    • Felipe was originally older like Eduardo and was more serious about his grove being trespassed on shown in one storyboard
