Trivia / Randy Savage

Go To

  • Actor Allusion:
    • In Spider-Man, Savage is cast as a wrestler who wrestles Spider-Man. For those unaware, Savage's very first gimmick was The Spider, who was similar to Spider-Man.
    • The Dial M for Monkey episode "Rasslor" cast Savage as an intergalactic wrestling champion by the same name. The final line of the episode is delivered by Rasslor: "OOOOH, YEAAAAAH!"
    • One episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast depicted Space Ghost's grandfather, Leonard Ghostal, as an ex-pro wrestler voiced by Savage. Both Zorak and Moltar play this up for all it's worth.
  • Fountain of Expies: His colourful appearance and distinctive voice make him easily recognisable. Hell, just look under Affectionate Parody on the main section of his page to see just how many characters he's inspired.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: In typical booker fashion, WCW incorporated Macho's divorce and growing paranoia into in his angles ("THE GOVERNMENT IS CORRUPT AND OUT TO END MY WRESTLING CAREER.")
  • Reclusive Artist: He didn't make many public appearances during the last decade or so of his life because he was busy taking care of his ailing parents, doing charity work in his community and marrying his second wife. He did have some guest roles in some animated films and TV shows and did a Teaser spot for his appearance in WWE All Stars.
  • Wag the Director: Pressured WCW execs to induct his father, Angelo Poffo, in their Hall of Fame, despite Poffo never having wrestled for WCW. This was cited as one of the reasons Gordon Solie quit WCW shortly after.
    • He also got a contract guarantee for his brother Lanny, AKA the Genius. Despite being employed for four years, he never worked a single show. Still got paid though.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Had Hulk Hogan not coincidentally chosen to visit the TNA set on the same day as him, Savage might have stuck around. Then Jeff Jarrett might have dropped the World title sooner, and the company might have gotten a much needed boost.
    • Savage offered to help put Bret "The Hitman" Hart over as WWE Champion back in the 90s, but Vince McMahon was convinced that he was "too old" to draw crowds anymore, leading to his stint as a commentator.
    • He also proposed a two-year-long feud with Shawn Michaels that was axed for the same reason. This being axed is what convinced Randy to go to WCW.
    • Savage was also close to return to WWE in late '96/early '97. While Vince was eager to bring back Savage at first, he then abruptly decided that he wouldn't do any business with Savage anymore. More on that on the Memetic Molester entry on the YMMV page.
    • On the Macho Man: The Randy Savage Story DVD, Hulk Hogan noted that when he went to see a doctor, the doctor told him that he had offered to give Savage a heart checkup when he was there with his mother. Concerned for his mother's well being, Randy declined, saying that he would do it at a later date and just wanted to get her home safe. Had he taken the test, his death might have been averted.
    • Savage's teaser spot in WWE All-Stars along with a newly recorded version of Pomp and Circumstance (used in the WWE Video Games) seemed to hint that he might have been on the verge of mending fences with WWE.
    • And, of course, there is the fact that "Randy Poffo" was a promising baseball player until injuries caused his game to sharply deteriorate and forced him to retire at age 21, causing him to go into wrestling full-time. Needless to say, wrestling history would have been vastly different if Randy hadn't gotten hurt and he had kept playing baseball.
    • Despite putting out that infamous rap CD, Randy actually preferred rock and metal music. He stated at some point that he'd have probably put out a metal album if he had literally any confidence in his singing ability.
    • The Slim Jim campaign that featured Savage was originally created with Sam Kinison in mind, only for Kinison to decline the offer.
