  • Breakthrough Hit: "Roxanne" and the parent album put The Police on the map on both sides of the Atlantic.
  • Referenced by...:
    • "Roxanne" got a tango arrangement in Moulin Rouge!.
    • "Roxanne" would receive a loose parody by Flight of the Conchords in the form of "You Don't Have to Be a Prostitute", which would be featured an episode of the band's eponymous HBO show.
  • Throw It In!: The atonal piano chord and corpsing heard faintly at the start of "Roxanne" came from Sting accidentally sitting on a piano in the recording booth while trying to lean on it. The band kept it in, finding it amusing, and credited Sting with playing "butt piano" on the song.
  • Working Title: The album was planned from the outset to be released under the title Police Brutality, an attempt by manager Miles Copeland at exploiting the Police's early punk sound and image. However, after hearing "Roxanne", he decided to change the band's image, and with it the album's name.
