- Backed by the Pentagon: The US Navy was fully on board with the production, providing a destroyer and three different submarines, plus crew for the ships and technical advisers.
- Blooper: At the end, one of CDR Holden's sons clearly says "Hi, Mr. Grant!" (It would have made sense if, in character, the boy had referred to RADM Sherman as "Uncle Matt".)
- California Doubling: Key West, Florida stands in for various Philippine locations. Luzon is not exactly known for its pine trees.
- Promoted Fanboy: A real-life example, in that the movie got made in part because Tony Curtis had always wanted to work with Cary Grant. He'd first become inspired to be an actor after seeing Grant in the rather more serious submarine film Destination Tokyo.
- Recycled: The Series: The film was adapted into a 1977–79 ABC sitcom, starring John Astin as Sherman and Richard Gilliland as Holden. Also in the cast were Tony Curtis's daughter Jamie Lee Curtis as one of the nurses, and Jim Varney as one of the crew.
